Pawning Wives and Daughters.
They have a curious way ol utlllt-
inK wives and daughters in aome parts
of India. If a roan wants money he
puts theBe members of his establish-
nient in pawn, and his creditor detains
thorn until the debt is discharged.
Tb<? custom varies in different locali-
ties. In Mellore the Yerealis pledge
their daughters to creditors, who may
either marry them or give them sway,
and a man who has to zo to Jail tie-
1 posits his wife with another family of
her tribs until his return. In North
Arcot unmarried daughters arj fre-
quently mortgaged, and become the
absolute property of the holder until
: liquidation.

"Nono the leap, M. Commissionaire,''

"Who Struck Ellly Patterson?"
' William Patterson, a Baltimore me^
chant, so the story goes, was struck
by an unknown man In a Georgia
street riot. He at once Jumped up
and ran through the streets, crying
"Who struck Biily Patterson?" Nobody
coald or would tfII him, naturally
enough for he wan a stranger and a
brawny stringer.
Ho afterward ofpred a public re-
ward through tl-.e newspapers to any
one who should name the man. Again
no one responded. Hj died and left
$1,000 In his will to any one who
would furnish the Information. (A
copy of this will is said to be 15led
away ia tbe ordinary's oflice, Cahiea*
vllle. Franklin county. Ga.)
The affair grew to be talked about.
"Who struck Billy Patterson?" be-
came a proverbial saying. Finally the
story of the reward reached the ears
of Mrs. Jenry G. Conely of Athol. N.
Y. She cemc forward and asserted
that her father. George W. Tlllcston,
•truck the blow, but was so terrified
by the result that ho fled the town.
