We as a church claim for the
work of Christian education a
fo'.'emost place. Its mission is
divine, its field the world. In
like greatness ol character, a

It takes years of glowing sunshine
and falling rains, and sweeping
winds, morning dews for the ten-

stimulus to the educational con-
science of the people and every
institution has been its benefi-
ciary. While our achievements
may not have exceeded our ex-
pectations, our hopes come to
fond fruition—yet. we must re-
member that Rome wa- i.ot built
in a day. Let us expend more
careful thought more spiritual
solicitude more sanctfied zeal,
more generous sympathy, more
liberal gifts and more patient
toil, upon the High Gate College
if we desire to see it the child ot
much radiant promise and de-
monstrate its right to live and
take its place iu history by the
character of the work it shall do,
I,V the noble souls it shall train
far "God and home, and native
land."
Wo are most cone- rued there
fore first ot all, not so much for
appliances equipments ai d en-
dorsements, etc, as for capable
instructors of solid ( hristian
character who have a mission to
the soul, as well as the brain of
American youths. We want
teachers who have eyes to discov-
er the nature and value of a
child, and this discovery cannot
be made until he is able to see
in the child what the Lord Jesus
ing hall, like the Vincent Hall to
board the pupils for the Univer-
sitv. Such a step lor Southern
Methodists would not only be a
departure from our well definded
and long established usage; but
would in my opinion subvert
rather than vindicate the wis-
dom of its inauguration and
would utterly fail to meet the
prospective demands ot its con-
stitucncy. Mr. Editor, as I
have already occupied more ot
your space than I had an idea of
loing when I began, I shall close
with host wishes tor Norman, as
the educational center for our

Gov. Renfrow has shown an
utter disregard lor the wcltiire of
the party ever sine ■ lie went into
office. One of his acts in that
line we have in mind was when
he refused to appoint Mr. II. I'.
Hartley of this city, in place of a
Kansas republican to look after
our exhibit at the world's fair.
Because the governor tailed to
get his "petrified Indian baby"
endorsed by the Smithsonian In-

should have appointed it to be
