FIRST OIL WELL TULSA
COUNTY
First oil well in Tulsa County, com-
pleted on June 25, 1901, drilled about
4 mi. west by Drs. J. C. W. Bland and
r Fred S. Clinton. This well brought first
nation wide publicity and oil boom to
Indian Ter. Rapid industrial develop-
-{ ment made Tulsa "Oil Capital of the
SWorld."
Fred S. Clinton, who, along with J. C. W.
Bland, drilled the first oil well in Tulsa
County and began the rush that was to
make Tulsa the "Oil Capital of the 5
World."
Location of marker: On U.S. Highway 66, at north side of
city limits at Red Fork, Tulsa County.
This well, about one-half mile west of the marker, was on the
Creek Indian allotment of the wife of Dr. J. C. Bland. In production,
with oil royalties paid the Bland heirs until closed about 1952, this
well contributed much to the oil rush in Oklahoma. The discovery
of "black gold" at this site would make Tulsa the "Oil Capital of
the World."62
