The Carr-Bartles Mill-one of the first commercial enterprises in
northern Oklahoma
CARR-BARTLES MILL
Site immediately North. Here in the
Cherokee Nation, in 1870, Nelson F.
Carr erected a grist mill on the Caney
(28 River. The Delawares had also settled
in this region. The mill was sold to
Jacob Bartles who added a flour mill
and had a store near in 1878. The set-
tlement soon spread south to higher
ground-the beginning of Bartlesville.
Location of marker: On the north edge of Bartlesville, Wash-
ington County.
In 1870, Nelson F. Carr cut a channel in the Caney River, built
a mill and started grinding meal with two buhrstones. It was the
first enterprise of this nature in what is now northern Oklahoma
and the first industry in Bartlesville. After five years Carr sold the
site to J. H. Bartles, who erected a flour mill; however, Carr con-
tinued to live in the area and acquired a fortune by investing in
another new industry- oil.
