ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The editors wish to acknowledge the assistance and cooperation given by
several people from the conception of this idea through its publication.
A special thanks goes to all of our contributors. Each of these welcomed
the opportunity to join us in this venture and took time from busy schedules
to produce readable and informative essays on leaders from tribes in which
they have a special interest. Moreover, they had the patience to deal with
inexperienced editors and for that, we are grateful.
Editors Kenny A. Franks and Martha Mobley of The Chronicles of
Oklahoma were patient, yet prodding, throughout this endeavor. Their
suggestions, ideas and time were freely given and gratefully accepted; the
result speaks loudly for their talent and ability.
Jack Haley and June Witt assisted in securing photographs from the
excellent Photographic Archives of the Western History Collections. For
the maps, we and other Oklahoma authors owe an eternal debt of gratitude
to John Morris, Charles R. Goins and Edwin McReynolds for their His-
torical Atlas of Oklahoma. W. Leon Lena, Fine Arts student at the Uni-
versity of Oklahoma and a promising Indian artist, designed the cover for us.
Martha Jordan assisted with proofreading and preparation of the index.
To friends like A. M. Gibson, R. David Edmunds, John Ellisor, Bob
Winfrey, Steve Day and Gary Roberts who listened and commented on our
ideas, we are grateful because we value their suggestions as much as their
friendship.
And finally to Martha, Troy and Sharon Jordan; Ina, Mark and Garrett
Holm and others who believed and shared "quiet times," we dedicate this
book.
