TO REPUBLICANS.
What will the Republican party do for tlie people of
tlic state if returned to power in 1918? What can it do?
Wliat does it propose to do?
For a while I will offer this space free to the use of
those wlio feel inclined to use it. I hope that we may have I
an article here every week pointing out some good thing]
in answer to the above questions. Any one who thinks
lie has a good suggestion just write it out briefly and clear-
ly- a farmer, a lawyer, or any one—and mail it to Capital
Hill News, 14 1-2 North Harvey, Oklahoma City. Don’t
run over 500 words.
This calls for a platform setting forth a policy which the, party
is pledged to carry out through its officials.
Every officer before entering upon the duties of his office is
required to take au oath in which lie swears, or affirms, that lie will
support, obey and defend the Constitution.
1 would suggest that the first plank in the platform be of oak,
strong enough to support, and broad enough to write the Consti-
tution of the state of Oklahoma. Then I would pledge the candi-
dates of the party to stand on that platform, not to violate their oath
of office, and to support the Constitution until changed, as pro-
vided therein, which is by a vote of the people.
This might mean much or little, hut when you consider the rec-
ord of the Republican party for pledges kept the least it could mean
is: That the people will get what they had a rig',1 to expect when
they voted to adopt he Constitution hat in the future your taxes
will be kept within the bounds of the law, that the state’s indebt-1
edness shall not exceed four hundred thousand dollars, instead of
running wild into 'lie millions, that the people will not lie dc-ied the i
right to initiate a hill, and have i* submitted at the first general
election (as defined ly, the courts; .,nd not at the political pleasure
of the chief executive of the state, that the slogan ‘let the people
rule” will lie realized through a fair vote and an honest count.
It will mean that the public will understand why the attorney
general was not allowed to investigate the affairs of the Columbia j
State Bank and the people permitted to know what became of the
money, and why the state banks now are required to pay hundreds
of thousands of dollars that these deposits may be made good.
It will mean that the state will he redistricted for the senatorial
purposes, the neglect of which has been a violation of the Constitu-
tion for more than seven years, and that the minority member of tile
I state election board will be appointed on the recommendation of the
state committee of that party.
It will mean that the people will know what the indebtedness
of the state really is and whether there is eight thousand or one
hundred and tewnty-five thousand dollars in the fish and game
fund and for what purpose this fund has been used.
As the editor has limited these articles to five hundred words
I must cease to enumerate. Last, but not least, however, it will
mean that the Republican party will, in the future, as in the past,
take the people into their confidence. When this is done and public
officials have not come to respect the Constitution and obey the
laws of the land then, and only then, will we have a government of
and by the people, working hand in hand for the mutual benefit of
mankind—1. B. NORTON.
SOLOMON'S HAREM.
The biography of Solomon contained in First Kings is still car-
ried and preached in modern pulpits as the indelible, undeniable
word of God. Solomon is himself worshipped along with Isaiah and
Moses as God’s enlightened messenger of divine light and inspir-
ation.
Recently a little booklet dropped into my hands containing a
; brief statement of the life and inspirations of Joseph Smith, the Mor-I
mon apostle. 1 have compared the two a little and have determined ]
that Smith has a long way the best and most reasonable claim to
! God’s ear.
Yet Joseph Smith is still persecuted hv the worshippers of
Solomon.
Solomon actually married seven hundred women, mostly heath- !
j en. according to his “divine" biographer, and besides these he main- i
j tained a harem of three hundred concubines.
The life and teachings of Smith are both infinitely purer than!
: were those of Solomon, and while Jehovah himself deserted Solomon ;
and sent Ahijali. the Shilo prophet, to tear down his empire, our own j
| central preachers still praise and laud the "vestal virgins” of his j
harem, extol his “divine" w isdom, and praise the "heroism” of the !
preachers who assassinated Smith.
Ihe records show that Smith had hut one wife. Even if he
1 had two, that did not make a harem, it merely constituted prostitu- :
tion and fornication.
The Word says that man and wife become one. There is no
i room there for three to become one. Paul would not allow double
i married people to have anything to do with his gospel arrange-
I ments.
\ny man who ever married more than one woman at a time
in all the world did so contrary to God's law. Any preacher who
will preach the writings of Solomon as the Word of God in a Chris-
tian pulpit, and condemn Joe Smith, is a fool.
Now listen: The 14th Chapter of John is the clearest language
from the lips of Jesus ev er uttered by him concerning his mission
I—his relation to the Father and their relation to men.
In it 1 find this conversation: "He that hath my command-!
I meats and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me. And he that loveth .
! me shall be loved by the Father, and I will love him and manifest j
myself to him. Judas asked "Lord, what is come to pass that
| thou wilt maifest thyself to us and not unto the world??" Jesus j
answered: “If a man love me he will keep my Word."
Don't the preachers ever read that chapter? Don’t they know
the Word of Jesus from a history of a harem?
