and completeness of
our stores and the
comprehensive scale on which American merchants
do things.
The American shopkeeper was the first to take
newspaper advertising seriously and to apply it on
a liberal scale in his business.
John Wanamaker, Marshall Field and a few oth-
ers were the pioneers in the serious use of this great
new force which was soon to revolutionize the busi-
ness world.

chants began to buy newspaper space in a big wav
and to use it regularlv.
Soon the results of this new policy became ap-
parent to all men—the advertising stores commenced
to grow m size and efficiency and came to be the
leaders in their respective communities—with the re-
sult that it was not long before a new order of
things ua- started in the retail stores of this country
which m time has placed the American store as an
institution at the top and in a class apart!
The merchants themselves are not slow to recog-
nize the great part which newspaper advertising has
played in the building up of legitimate business. To
