Weak Spot in His Defense.
A religious worker was visiting a
southern penitentiary, when one pris-
oner in some way took his fancy. This
prisoner was a negro, who evinced a
religious fervor as deep as it was
gratifying to the caller.
“Of what were you accused?” the
prisoner was asked.
"Dey says 1 took a watch,” an-
swered the negro. “I made a good
fight. I had a dandy lawyer, and he
done prove an alibi wif ten witnesses
Den my lawyer ho shore made a
strong speech to de jury. But it wa'n’t
no use, sah! I get ten years.”
"I don’t see why you were not ac-
quitted,” said the religious worker.
“Well, sah,” explained the prisoner,
“dere was shore one weak spot 'bout
my defense—dey found de watch in
my pocket.”—Tit-Bits.
A Pause in Devotions.
’ Mabel,” called her father, outside
her bedroom door. There was no an-
swer, so he called again. Still no re-
ply. He pushed open the door, which
was not completely shut, and reach-
ing for the button, turned on the lights.
Then he saw Mabel. She was kneel-
ing at the sidie of her bed in her night-
gown, in the attitude of prayer—the
attitude, that is, as to kneeling. But
she had raised her head at the inter-
ruption and paused in her devotions
to blaze at him with a face flushed
with impatience.
“Gee whiz, daddy! Can’t a woman
say her prayers?”
Then she bowed her head again,
piously, and daddy, properly rebuked,
slipped noiselessly away.

Vlllages Are Buried Under Fifty Feet
of Snow and Ice and
Number of Dead is
Unknown
Spokane, Wash.—At least twenty-
four persons are dead, twelve others
suffered severe injuries and several
are missing as the result of snow-
slides which swept the towns of
Mace, Dorsey and Burke, Idaho, and
the mining camp of Mullen, Idaho.
Several victims at Mace and Burke
came here from the Joplin mining
district.
The names of the two men killed
at Dorsey are unknown.
The town of Burke is buried fifty
feet under a masa of snow and earth.
The slide was three thousand feet
long.
A cold wind Is sweeping the can-
yon and impeding those who are
working to save a few more lives.
Those who have journeyed from Wal-
lace U) Mace and llurkc say the num-
j her of dead probably never wiH he
known accurately, as the huge slida
can never be entirely removed.
A finger sticking above the surface
of the 3now saved the life of Mrs.
George Gibson, who was buried in
the slide at Mace. For more than
an hour the woman was buried with
only a finger protruding above the
snow. Rescuers searching with lan-
tbrns saw the finger and dug her out.
She was half smothered and almost
frozen when rescued Her condition
is serious.
Twelve dead bodies have been re-
covered at Mace and thirty-seven
persons are Injured as a result of
the slide. Others are believed to he
buried under the snow und debris.
The fight against time and cold has
been waged bravely and persistently
by the little army of men who are
hoping to find under the heaps of
ruins In the ravine some who have
escaped death.
They have dug frantically for many
hours, scarcely pausing to warm
their numb bodies. Every available
able-bodied man has been pressed
into service, and even old men and
young boys have joined the rescue
force.
Mace is situated on the creek bed
and the mountains rise high On either
side of the town. The main body of
I the avalanche, which started from
'he top of Custer mountain, passed
; beyond 'ho town and, striking the op-
I posite slope with terrific force, rush-
ed up the opposite mountain side.

BURDENS LIFTED FROM BAD BACKS
Weary is the back that bears the burden of kidney ills. There’s no rest nor peace for the man or
woman who has a bad back. The distress begins in early morning. You feel lame and not refreshed.
It’s hard to get out of bed. It hurts to stoop to tie your shoes. All day the ache keeps up. Any sudden
movement sends sharp twinges through the back. It is torture to stoop or straighten. At night the suf-
ferer retires to toss and twist and groan. Backache is kidney ache—a throbbing, dull aching in the kid-
neys. Plasters or liniments won’t do. You must get at the cause, inside.

me for several years. There was

IN AGONY WITH ECZEMA
"No tongue can tell hew I suffered
for five years with Itching and bleed-
ing eczema, until I was cured by the
Cuticura Remedies, and I am so grate-
ful I want the world to know, for
what helped me will help others. My
body and face were covered with
sores. One day it would seem to be
better, and then break out again with
the most terrible pain and itching. I
have been sick several times, but
never in my life did I experience such
awful suffering as with this eczema. I
bad made up my mind that death was
near at hand, and I longed for that
time when I would be at rest. I had
tried many different doctors and medi-
cines without success, and m.v mother
brought me the Cuticura Remedies, In-
sisting that I try them. I began to
feel better after the first bath with
Cuticura Soap, and one application of
Cuticura Ointment.
”1 continued with the Cuticura Soap
and Cuticura Ointment, and have
taken four bottles of Cuticura Resolv-
