Relief For Belgium
To the Editor of Tho Nows:
Withdrawal of Brand Whitlock from Bolglum ha* bean
sxpectsd for some time, end full preparation has been made
to carry on the work of relief.
Ti e Belgians and the Inhabitants of the occupied por-
tion of northern France must be fed. In Belgium alone
7.600.con are dependent for their very lives on food im-
ported for thorn by tho American commission.
Thoro can be no cessation of effort. The commission
will continue as before. Tho only difference will bo that
competent trained men stented thru th# Netherlands gov-
ernment will b# appointed members of th* commission and
will supervise the distribution of food In Belgium’ and
Northern France.
The commission will continue to moblllie the finances,
purrhsso nnd transport all of the goods for these 10,000.000
peoplo, turning It over to the new members of the commis-
sion at the Belgian border.
It should he made clear that no relaxation In the efforts
of th» commission to secure additional contribution* for the
destitute 1= contemplated. Our ofMceg In Rotterdam. London
and New York will be maintained exactly rs at present and
the Brussels office will take Instructions from Mr. Ho’orer,
chairman of the commission, as In the past.
Everyone who reads the Ulapatches describing condi-
tions In thp recovered villages and towns of France during
the last few days must note the stirring statements of the
repatriated French that It wa» th„ American commission who
saved them. > *
Our problem now Is- “Shall those remaining behind
the lines bo abandoned?" We cannot feel that Americans
will ccyisent to this.
THE COMMISSION FOR RELIEF OF BELGIUM.
Note: Money for relief should be sent direct to the
