Rickard’s keys had been left out-
side and the watchman had taken
them, believing his employer had for-
gotten to thrust them Intj his pocket.
Pounding on the door and hurling
of shoulders against it proved futile.
Rickard sat down and pondered. Then
he made an impression of the keyhole
and. starting up the old blast furnace
he used to pump before he wore
"boiled" shirts, he laboriously con
structed a key.
After a few plunges of the key into
cold water the merchant made it fit
and he was out in the spacious rooms
beyond the den. Rut he couldn't open
the front door, nor did his yell attract
any attention.
Going to another office, Rickard
hurst open the door and telephoned to
his wife. The little woman hustled
downtown and got a ppliceman and a
squad was summoned. They got a
ladder and tried to span tho apace
between the Rickard place and an ad-
joining house. They failed.
“Let's get tip through this adjoin

Up went the little body of rescuers,
and over the roof, the woman In the j

certain whether to laugh or cry. Just
at that juncture a tall, broad shoul-
dered man with whiskers of the hay-

He saw the boy's final attempt to
recover the ball and his narrow es-
cape from injury. Two strides and he
was beside his victim.
"Ain't you got no sense?” he de-
manded. "Want to got run over or
have your brains kicked out?"
In a few sentences the boy ex-
plained the situation and pointed to
the ball. The big man patted the
horse on the flank, spoke a few sooth-

hand deftly and pettingly down tho
leg until he reached the hock.
"H’ist, boy, h’ist." he commanded,
