TELL OL- THEIR AIRSHIP
The First Correct Statement of What
Wright Brothers Have Done
DAYTON, O.: The Wright brothers, j
inventors of the flying machine which
has attracted such widespread atten-
tion, prepared the following which
they say is the first correct statement
of the two successful trials by them:
"On the morning of December IT,
between 10:30 and noon, four flights
were made, two by Orville Wright and
two by Wilbur Wright. The starts
were all made from a point on the
level near our camp in Dare county,
N. C. The wind at the time of the
flights had a velocity of twenty-seven
miles an hour. The flight was
directly against the wind. Ea<~
the machine started from th
ground by its own power with
I sistance from gravity or other
I whatever. After a run of aboil
| feet along a mono-rail track
held the machine eight incite
! the ground, it rose from th<j
j and, undeY the direction of tl
ator, climbed upward on an
course till a height of eight
feet from the ground was i
after which the course was
near horizontal as the wind gv
the limited skill of the operato
permit. The ‘flyer’ made its
ward with a speed of ten m
hour over the ground and of t
thirty-five miles an hour thro:
air. The first flight was shod
succeeding flights rapidly inert]
length and at the fourth trial
of fifty-nine seconds was n:
which the machine flew a lift
than half a mile through the
a distance of more than 85
the ground. All the expeiimeiget.
been conducted at our own
without assistance from any in
or institutions.”
