GOOD ROAD CLUB
As per announcement, .1. L.
Merritt, the good road boomer of
Tecumseh, came to McLoud bright
and early last Saturday morning
for the purpose of attending the
Farmers’ Institute, and to organize
a township Good Road-* Club. lie
spent the week in Buies township,
agitating the subject and distribut-
ing Good Road Liieruture through
the different schools, and the re-
sult of his work was, that the town
wtis unusually full of interested
farmers, despite the gehtle (1)
“zephers” anti fly;ng sand.
At 2:30 p.m. the meeting was
called to order iu the Hollis Hall
by Mr. Merritt, who. iu stating the
objets of the meeting, gave the
audience quite u Good lloads lect-
ure. He pointed out the import-
ance of organization and legislation
in order to share in the Brownlow
appropriation, and said that if
statehood for Oklahoma was de-
ferred to next session of congress
she would probably get a largo
good road land grant, the proposi-
tion appearing too lute to succeed
in the preseut session. “Tne senti-
ment throughout the county favor-

roads is almost universal”, said
Mr. Merritt, “and if the present
dounty board will not enforce the
law on this vital matter, they
should he succeeded by one that
will,”
Every citizen of Bales township
must become interested iu the road
reform movement. It is non-par-
tisan, costs nothing, is the para-
mount issuo, aDtl promises more
I for Pottawatomie County, than all
other political propositions put to
gether. We say “political” because
it ought to, and probably will, be
made a plank in the political plat-
form of both parties in the coming
campaign.
For the benefit of those who look
upon the movement with suspicion
and ask, “Who pays Merritt?” we
will say ho has put in nine weeks
ugituting and organizing without
price or pay, paying his own
expenses, also for the printing of
all literature, postage, and some
artioles, amounting iu all to fifty
dollars, without hope of any re-
ward other than enjoying ultimate-
ly better roads throughout tho
county.
