LESSEES PROTEST
MEETING CALLED FOR JANUARY 5TH
OCCUPANTS OF SCHOOL LAND OB-
JECT TO INCREASED RENTALS
School Land Matters Rapidly Coming
to a Head in Oklahoma—Hot time
Expected in School Land Office—
Prof. Elder to Talk on Question
GUTHRIE: School land matters are
rapidly coming to a head in Oklahoma
and the lessees’ organization is pre-
paring to take decisive action.
A letter received in the city by Edi-
tor John Golobie from L. Blssell of
Blackwell, of school land lessees,
states that the annual business meet-
ing of the organization will be held on
January 5, at the same time as the
annual convention of the Oklahoma
bar association and the session of the
Oklahoma supreme court. The lessees’
annual meeting is for the purpose of
electing officers to serve for the next
two years.
Mr. Bissell states that as the terri-
torial bar association is in session on
January 5 that the lessees will take ad-
vantage of that fact and hold their
own sessions accordingly, in order to
hear the addresses before the bar
meeting by John Golobie and Prof. F.
S. Elder of Norman. Golobie speaks
in favor of selling the land3 and Elder
in favor of their retention by the ter-
ritory.
Regarding his stepping down from
the editorship of the State Register,
which he has been conducting as a
school land lessees’ organ, Mr. Golo-
bie says that he expects to have an-
other paper in the very near future,
within tlie next month, to continue the
advocacy of the lessees’ rights. Mr.
Golobie advocates the sale of the lands
as the better plan for the territory
and the school fund. His stepping
down from the Register management
was the alleged result of a disagree-
ment among the owners of that paper.
The fact that the present week is
designated as “kickers’ ” week in the
school land office does not signify that
the kicking will be confined to this
week, for the outlook now is that next
week will see the hottest time ever
experienced in the school land office.
The lessees will be in the office in
force to protest against the increased
rental valuation of the lands. While
the majority of the lessees, presum-
ably, take a decisive action against the
increase of the rental values, yet there
are some who are inclined to lay the
blame on the'lessees’ organization.
A prominent Woods county lessee,
who is in the city to protest against
the increase as made by the recent
board of equalization, says: “It lias
nopularly been supposed that the
school land lessees of Oklahoma bad
one of the strongest and most aggres-
sive organizations in the southw-est.
First came the territorial organiza-
tion with a complete sec of officers;
next came the county organizations
with their officers, and in many in-
stances the lessees of the townships
organized. The strongest of motives,
that of protecting their homes, actuat-
ed these organizations, and it was
supposed that the officers would be
watchful and vigilant in seeing that
their interests were guarded closely.
On the contrary, the reverse has re-
sulted.”

Wm. II. Neighbors, the well-

“Some four years ago an attack
of grip settled in my back, and
I have suffered off and on ever
since with a dull, heavy aching
across the small of my back,
always more severe in the
morning. It was difficult for
me to stoop or straighten, and
if I sat down for any length of
time it was hard for me to
arise. I took two boxes of

“ In March, 1897, I was cured

for hours at a time with ter- j
rible pain in riiy back, and the

were in as bad a state as pos- |
sible. I suffered with hemor-
rhages frequently and was in
a weak state. Four boxes of
Doan’s Kidney Pills cured me,
and I now gladly relindorse tho

time which lias since elapsed,
nearly seven years, I have never
had - the slightest sign of a
return of the trouble.”
