want to see the work here stop-

I am talking to you'about the
lease proposition. This is not an
well to eaoh 3)3-acres when the
lease is alone. It only takes 412
wells to offset 64 quarters in a
body,or one well to eaoh 25 acres.
You would not rent the 80. Could
you expect the producer tb spend
money for years before he re-
ceived any profit?

value received for leases or they
would not be of any value to us
No one will deny that to strike
oil here will help the country and
boost land values. To grant a
lease does not in any way affect
title to land or damage the lessor.
Courts have held that sohool land
lessees, who have not paid out,
have the right to make leases for
oil and gas purposes, and the
state cannot interfere. Leases
will be placed in the bank, and
not recorded until we find we oan
drill the well. If we can not do
so, the party can then demand
the return of leass.
All leases provide that we MUST
complete this well by Sept. 20,
1910, and that we must drill on
your land by Sept. 20, 1918, or
pay you one dollar an acre for
failure to do so. Failure on our
part in either instance forfeits
the lease. Leases expire Sept.
20, 1920 unless we produce oil or
gas oe the lond. Lessors get a
ROYALTY or one-eighth of the
oil, or the market price of one-
eighth of the oil from the land.

here and there, so many wells
would have to be drilled in such
small space that it would soon
kill the field and maka it unprof-
itable to drill even on the land
that had not been leased jbeoause
whether you lease or not,the wells
will have to be drilled around
you to protect those who do lease.
If the leases are blocked, each
lea-e will get a few wells and the
field will last and be profitable
for years. Others wishing to drill
will do it farther from the first
well and the field will develop
more. Taken in large blooks the
offsetting will not have to be done
so fast as only those opposite
others drilling will have to be
drilled right away. By the terms
of the lease you will get a well
on your place muoh sooner than
if you wait for a bonus.
A few parties do not want to
lease because they want to sell.
They think that to lease will hurt
their chances. Do you know of
any way to sell at a farm better
than to strike oil near your farm
within the next yeor? If we do

What is a bonus? It is the
sum paid for the lease. In shal-
low fields it is an item of impor-
tance to the land owner. In deep
fields like this will be if oil is
found, it will not amount to one-
fourth of one year’s royalty. It
is based on two thing: The great-
er the cost of driling and the lest
the amount of oil produced the
less is the bonus. The lesser the
cost of drilling and the greater
the production,the greater bonus.
Thu9 the chance to win on roy-
alty is a much greater gamble
than the chance of striking oil.
Producers or the people who
drill for oil are business people,
not gamblers, and WILL NOT
pay bonus until it has been pro-
ven by drilling around the lease
that oil is under it.
In the best part of the Cushing
field, whe e bonuses were high-
est, one man held out three years
for a bonus. During that time
his neighbors received 16 times
as much money as the the bonus
he asked. This is nearly always
the case. It is the speculator
who pays a bonus, then sits down
and waits for the producer to buy
if lie finds out for sure that oil is
there by drilling around the land.!

To the Landowners Near the
Testwell :
We have done our best to get
an oil well put down near Luther
and have spent over two years’
time and more than 822,000.00 in
money to get the well down to its
present depth of 2,000 feet, and
it is in good shape. We have
been forced to suspend work on
account of lack of money. Now
if the property owners near this
well want oil development in this
country it. is up to them. We
can get a company to finish this
well if we can get the leases, but
we can not interest a company
who will take hold of this when
the land in the immediate.neigh-
borhood of the well is unleased.
Now, Gentlemen,we have done
our best; it is up to you, and it
would certainly bo worth as
