From The Chicago Port:
Buffalo, Feb. 10.—The largest loco-
m dive in the world—No. 989— built
at Schenectady for freight hauling on
the Santa Fe, is here on itc way to
Chicago. The massive engine stands
so high that its stunted smokestack,
the top of which is sixteen feet
above the ties, had to be removed to
permit the engine to |tass with safety
beneath the bridges between this city
and Schenectady.
From the end of the tender to the
t;p of the pilot No. 989 is seventy
feet, the boiler is nearly seven feet in
diameter and a tall man may walk be-
neath it. Yet, the center of gravity
of the monster is low several inches
below the top line of the drive wheels
Exclusive of its fifty ton tender the
engine weighs 260,000 pounds.
On a level track the 989 could haul
a train a mile and a half long, carry-
ing the harvest of a farm of 10,000
acres. Its tractive power is 53,900
pounds. Ten massive drive wheels, as
tall as a man, so heavily counterbal-
anced that they seem solid, give the
engine a grip on twenty feet of track
and make No. 989 a world’s-record
hauling machine.
This “decapod” is so built that
232,000 pounds weight rests on the
drive wheels. The distinguishing
equalizer beam construction marks
the 989 as an engine of American de-
sign. It has a grate area of sixty
square feet and the fuel will be oil.
It has 4,682 feet of heating surface,
and with 413 flues will steam readily.
