Discussing the mooted question, “wo-
man’s pluce Is in the home,” Repre-
sentative Foster of Ohio said on the
floor of the house the other day:
“Out In my country a fellow’s wife
was tnken to a hospital for the insane
nnd her husband called to discuss her
ease with a physician. ‘I can’t for the
life of me understand what made that
woman crazy,’ the husband said; ‘she

That Kind of Shortsightedness Was
Something for Which He Had
No Cure.
*0 ^ woman consulted an oculist about
her husband’s eyesight, saying she
■wanted a very strong pair of glasses
for him.
“I fear I cannot recommend glasses
without first seeing your husband.”
the oculist said.
“He won’t come at any price," was
the reply.
“Then tell me something about him.
he see objects at a distance, or
he experience difficulty when
reading? For Instance, could he see
that pigeon flying above us?”
“Rather," the woman said. “He’d
spot a pigeon on the wing quicker than
tie’d see an airplane, especially If he’d
got a bet on it. What I want yer to
cure Is his short sightedness when he’s
looking for a job. lie’s been lookin’
for work for the last ten years and
never got any to suit his fastidious
eyesight yet.”—I’ittsuurgh Chroniele-

Little Marian's Cleverly Conveyed
Reproof to Her Altogether Too
Fastidious Relatives.
The two spinster aunties really did
have a very beautiful house, but they
were too particular about It to suit
their small niece and nephew, who had
become tired of being told to “tie care-
ful” in this room, and “don’t touch
anything” in that one.
And Marian decided very tactfully to
let them know about it, too. So one
day when she and her brother Billy
were in the presence of their aunties
she began a conversation on the sub-
ject of their future careers. After John
had named his as that of a lawyer,
Marian announced that she was going
to be a school teacher like her aunties.
“And Billy, since I’m going to be «n
old maid, I don’t ’spect you’d better get
married, either,” she told him. “It
would be awful hard on your children
when they came to my house to be
told to be careful so much.”
Los Angeles, Aug. 4.—Revenge for
the part he played in the prosecution
of a group of dynamiters in the mid-
dlewest several years ago was as-
signed by the police here as the prob-
able motive for an attempt on the me
of Oscar Lawler, former assistant
attorney general of the United States.
Shortly before 3 o’clock this morn-
ing, according to information gathered
by the police, a man driving an
automobile, stopped in front of the
Lawler residence in an exclusive resi-
dential district. He dropped some-
thing, leaped into the car and rap-
idly drove away. An explosion fol-
lowed almost immediately. The house
burst in flames. Mr. Lawler, his wife
and one child, were trapped within.
Passers-by rescued Oscar Lawler, Jr.
five years old.
Mr. Lawler dragged his wife to a
window, and in the midst of flame,
lowered her from the upper story.
Then he leaped to the ground. They
were removed to the Sisters Hospi-
tal. Two others of the three Lawler
children, Charles and Jane, were out
of the city on a visit.
Physicians attending Oscar Law-
led. and his wife, announced that
Mr. Lawler’s chances for recovery
were about even. Mrs. Lawler, they
said, would recover. The Lawler
home was a large structure in the
fashionable Wilshire district in the
west part of the city. Mr. and Mrs.
Lawler were sleeping on a porch in
the south side of the house. Miss
Bessie Mills, a nurse, and Oscar
Lawler Jr., wkere on a screened porch
at the rear of the house. The explo-
sion sent a sheet of flames up the
side of house directly below the porch
occupied by the Lawlers and cut off
escape to the outside. Mr. Lawler
and his wife rushed into the house and
tried to make their way to tl)e r**r
porch where their son was with the
nurse- They were cut off by .
and Games. Mr. Lawler carried his
wife through flames to a front win-
dow and dropped her to the ground.
He then leaped after her. The young
son and the nurse were rescued by
neghbors.

He Was Learning.
An Tndiannpolis physician has n new
office boy, who himself has ambitions
to become a doctor. The other day a
little girl came into the office and
asked to see the doctor. “He Isn t in
just now.” Informed the boy, and in the
conversation that followed asked her
who was sick.
“My papa," answered the little girl.
"And I just wanted some medicine for
him. lie isn’t sick enough for the
doctor to come to see him.”
The office boy thought a minute.
Then, "Is he insured?” he asked.
The little girl nodded that he was.
The look of hesitation left the office
boy’s face. “All right 1” he said. “I’ll
fix him some medicine.”

Copenhagen, Aug. 4.—T* former
Prince Henry in a letter to King
George published today by- the Ham-
burgfier Nachrfichten says the truth
about the war may be had from
allied statesmen and he suggests that
if the former German emperor is
placed on trial the statesmen also ap-
pear. The letter asks King George,
‘‘in the name of justice and his own
interests,” to desist from demand ng
the extradition and trial of the former
German emperor. The letter, which
is signed ‘‘Your Humble Cousin,
Henry.” charges that England plotted
Germany’s commercial downfall. If
the allies want the truth, the former
prince says, the leading statesmen of
Great Britain and her allies should
also be brought before the tribunal as
“primarily and urgently suspected of
guilt in the world war.”
Machine Guns Against Strikers.
Geneva. Aug. 4.—Troops sent by the
government to quell strike riots at
Basle and Zurich, were forced to use
machine guns mounted on automo-
biles during the disorders yesterday.
The strikers at Basle ripped up the
pavements and bombarded the troops,
injuring many. A number of strikers
were killed and wounded and many
were arrested. At Basle the outbreak
was said to be of a Bolshevik charac-
ter while at Zurich the disorders were
attributed to the inerdhsing cost of
living. _
