Government plans for n billion-
bushel wheat crop next year to help
the. United States feed the Allies
have received u set-hack.
It was disclosed Wednesday by
the December crop report of the De-
partment of Agriculture that while
winter wheat was planted on the lar-
gest acreage ever sown in that cer-
eal it condition on December 1 was
tho lowest on record for that date.
A winter crop of ."i-IO.OOO.OOU bu-
shels was forecast by the bureau of
crop estimates.
The actual production will be
greater or less than that quantity ac-
cording as conditions are better or
worse than average. Through a big
spring crop It is still hoped to bring
tho year's total to somewhere near
the billion mark.
An area of more than I7.oun.non
teres was the mark set by the (iov-
orninent for farmers to plant to win-
ter wheat this fall but the Decern
tier canvass shows that 42.17fl"iiiu
teres were sown. The farmers did
their best officials of the depart-
ment say but condition were much
against them. The chief ob-lai le
has been very dry weather in the
wheat belt.
