Quest strolled off again and glanced
at his watch as he rejoined tho lltUe

CHAPTER XXX.
' Quest awoko tho nest morning
stretched out his hand and glanced at
the watch by the Bide of tho bed. It
was barely six o'clock. Ho turned over
and dozed again looked again at half-
past six and Anally at a few minutes
to seven rose and mauo a hasty
toilet. Then in the. act of placing his
watch In his waistcoat pocket ho gave
a sudden start By its side half cov-
ered by tho handkerchief which he had
thrown upon tho little tabic stood a
small black box! For a moment he
was motionless. Then ho Btretched out
bis hand romoved the lid and drew
out the usual neatly folded pieco of
paper:
Even time fights you. It loses that
you may lose. The Hands.
Quest for a moment was puzzled.
Then ho hurried into tho next tent
whero tho profossor was Bleeping
peacefully.
"Say profossor whatta tho tlrao by
your -watch?" Quest asked shaking
him gontly.
Tho profossor Eat up and drew his
chronometer from under his pillow.
"Seven o'clock" he replied; "five
mlnuteB past maybe."
Quobl nodded.
"That socmB all right" ho declared.
"I'll explain later profossor."
Ho hurrlod out Into Fronch'a tent
and fonnd tho inspector Just drawing
on his Bhoes.
"French what's tho tlmo?" ho de-
manded. "Throe minutes past bovod or
thereabouts" French replied yawn-
ing. "I'm coming right nlong. We've
got lots of time. Three-quarters of
an hour ought to do it tho boys iSuj."
They walked outside to the camp
.where tho cowboys were finishing
their breakfast.
"Say boss" one of them called out
"you're not making that 8:30 train to
New York?"
"Why not?" Quest asked quickly.
"It's only three-quarters of an hour's
ride Is it?"
"Maybe not" tho other replied "but
ns It's eight now your chances ain't
looking lively. Kind of overslept
haven't you?"
Both men glanced once moro at
their watches Then Quest thrust his
back with a little oath.
"Our watches hove been get back J"
bo exclaimed. 'The Iinnds again!"
For a moment they looked at one
another dumfounded. Then Quest
moved towards the corral.
"Say Is thero any quicker way to
the depot?" ho Inquired of the cow-
boys. They beard bis question Indiffer-
ently "Fifty dollars" Quest continued "to
anyone who can take wa by a quicker
route."
Ono of them rose slowly to bis feet
1 "Waal" he observed "fifty dollars
would como In kind of handy. Yes
I reckon I can cut off a mile or two for
you."
"Fifty dollars for you then" Quest
replied as they hurried towards the
horses "and an extra ten If we make

black box. Sho took off the Ud with
trembling fingers drew out a scrap
of paper and read.
Fools! Tongues of flame will cross
Quest's path. He will never reach the
depot alive.
Lcnora glanced at Laura's empty
bed. Then sho staggered to tho open-
ing of the tent.
"Laura!" she cried.
There was no one there. Tho cow-
boys had all gono to their work Laura
had passed out of sight across tho
ridgo in the distance. Lcnora stag-
gered to the cook wagon where tho
Chlneso cook waa sitting cleaning
plates.
"Listen!" sho cried. "They are in
danger the three men who have gono
off to the depot! If you'll ride aftor
them I will glvo you a hundred dol-
lars. Give them this sho added
holding out the scrap of paper.
Tho Chinaman shook his bead. Ho
glanced at the slip of paper Indiffer-
ently and want on with his work.
"No enn ride missco." ho said.
Lenora looked around helplessly.
Tho camp waa empty. Sho staggered
across towards her own horse.
"Como and help me" sho ordered.
The Chinaman camo unwillingly.
They found her saddle but ho only
gazed at it in a stolid sort of fashion.
"No can fix" he said "M Isaac no
can ride. Better go back bed."
Lcnora pushed him on ono side.
With a great effort sho managed to
reach her place In tho Baddle. Thon
she turned and. with her fuco to tho

herself In tho saddle with on effort.
Yet all the time that ono sentenco was
ringing in her head "Tongues of
flame!" Sho kept looking around anx-
iously. Suddenly the road dropped
from a little decline. Sho was con
scious of a wavo of heat. In tho dls
tanco ahe could see the smoko rolling
across tho open. Sho touched her
horso with the quirt. Tho spot which
sho must pass to keep on the track to
tho depot was scarcely a hundred
yards ahead but already fho fire
seemed to bo running like quicksilver
across tho ground licking up the dry
greasewood with Indeed a flaming
tongue. She glanced once behind
warned by tho beat. Tho fire was
closing In upon her. A puff of smoke
suddenly enveloped her. Sho coughed.
Her head began to swim and a fit of
giddiness assailed her. Sho rocked
in ber saddle and the pony came to a
sudden standstill faced by tho mass of
rolling smoke and flame.
"Sanfordl" Lenora cried. "Save
mo!"
The pony reared. She slipped from
tho saddlo and fell across the track.
