The railroads are hard up. Therefore they do not
spend the money they should. The lack of new capital
prevents their making many needed improvements. Be-
tween this and reduced current expenditures the effect per-
meats all down the line from manufacturer to jobber and
finally to the retailer and working man.
1525000 employees are working directly for the rail-
roads. There are 2500000 employees in coal mines steel
and manufacturing plants directly dependent upon the rail-
roads for business. Since the average family consists of five
persons some 20 million people look to the railroads for
their daily bread. Railroad prosperity then vitally affects
one out of every five of the country's total population.
Cutting down expenses means laying off men and cur
tailing supplies which in turn means the laying off of more
men employed by the supply firms. The purchasing power
of these 4025000 men 20000000 men women and
children will set in motion the wheels of all other industries.
Normal business conditions will then be at hand. The rail-
roads will put to work 800000 men now idle this in turn
will put to work 400 thousand men now idle.
Urge your state senator and representative by letter or
telegram at once to help bring back prosperity to the coun
try by RESTORING THE 3-CENT PASSENGER RATE
AND PERMITTING A REASONABLE INCREASE IN
FREIGHT RATES.
