Osage County
Oklahoma City is raising a
bonus of $75,000 to secure the
M 0 & G railroad from Henrietta.
Oklahoma City has the public
spirit sufficient to get what it
goes after.
Osage county’s total valuation
as listed for tax purposes
amounts to $23,156,290. This
includes all surplus lands, the
right to tax which is being con-
tested in the courts. The total
amount may be considerably re-
duced by a decision in this case.
Farmers of Osage County have
been busy the past week re-plant-
ing their crops. Thousands of
acres of kafir corn, cane, and
cow peas have been planted, and
the prospects are that winter will
fiind sufficient feed in the county
to carry stock through in good
shape.
The down-pour of rain yester
day evening and last night is
convincing proof that a storm
sewer of sufficient capacity to
carry off the surplus water which
rushes down Grand View and
Palmer avenues during such
storms should be constructed in
advance of the paving on adja-
cent streets. The rush of water
and mud down Grand View last
night extended entirely across
Main street add had the paving
been down it would have been
covered to a depth of several
inches.

Mayor Ferguson and the City
council are now wrestling with
the question of selecting a new
engineer to oversee the work of
paving in the different districts
and the work of construction on
the water and light plant ex-
tension. The work to a large
extent depends upon this select-
ion and the Mayor is taking all
possible care to not only secure
a competent man but one who
can be relied upon to guard the
city’s interests against all defal-
cation in both work and material
used in the various improve-
ments. This city has had a
little experience along this par-
ticular line and as a result
of which the city is now defend-
ing a suit in the district court at
considerable cost to protect it-
self. It’s a safe proposition to
make haste slowly in such
matters. The city wants good
honest work and expects to pay
for same but it does not want
an engineer who gets a rake off
from the contractors for false
reports. The season has so far
advanced that but little service
will be secured from these im-
provements this year. The city
must build for the future and it
cati do so in mi better way than
in guarding well the public work
to be done.

helped it in the enforced resigna-
tion of Chief of Police Lincoln
McKinley. Mr. McKinley was
very popular with the church
people and his sudden release
soured many on the administra-
tion who had previously upheld
it.
Sunday morning at the Grace
Presbyterian Church, of which
Mr. McKinley is a member, a
lively demonstration of disap-
proval of the administration took
place. Two petitions of recall
were presented to the congrega-
tion and many signers were se-
cured during the church hour.
The gathering took rather the
form of an indignation meeting
and was apparently strongly
prejudiced against the mayor.
Mayor Graham is at present sick
at his home, but hopes to be out
again in a few days.

of the counties the proposed
highway will cross to discuss
plans for preliminary surveys

Prison labor probably will be
used in constructing the high-
