Senator Owen Says Our
Red Gravel is Valuable
Last Saturday morning Senator
Robert L. Owen motored to La-
verne in company with Judge D.
P. Marum, Jack Garvev, John
Gerlach and Mr. Chilcott of
Woodward and Mr. Watson of
Kansas City, arriving here about
noon after a few stops along the
route atpoints near Laverne to
investigate the red gravel de-
posits and determine its fitness
for road building purposes.
The party was welcomed to our
city by a committee of the Cham-
ber of Commerce and were taken
to the Clover Hotel for dinner.
Senator Owen came here with
the desire to greet the people
of this section of the state and
ble a speaker and many of the
citizens being disaapointed in not
getting to hear him since it was
supposed that he would speak at
2:30
After a few minutes of discus-
sion of the actions of the congress
and seeate during the past three
years, the Senator called atten-
tion to the great possibilities of
our red gravel hills south of
town He savs that this gravel
contain* sufficient lime, clay,
shale and cement rock to make a
hard surfaced road almost equal
in utility to a cement road and
could be built, considering the
transportation cost, at a cost of
around $5,000 per mile as com-
pared to $20,000.00 and $25.-
000.00 per mile for cerm-nt roads.
He stressed the matter of our
going into this proposition and
explain briefly his work in the -
U S. Senate ns well as for the, * a commercial access by
purpose of learning first hand! J"*™.™"' the *l'"Vel for roo(l

Stock Sale Attracts Large! ---
Crowd j
There were several hundred
visitors in Laverne Saturday
from nearby counties to attend
tne 5th Annual Purebred sale
and incidentally many ot them
got to hear Senator Owen speak
who came to Laverne that day
rather unadvertised as to the
hour he would speak.
The sale moved along with fair-
ly good bidding but did not bring
as good prices as was expected.
More than 50 bead of good pure-
bred hogs and cattle were sold.
About the time the sale was
two thirds over a fire was re-
ported at a stock barn, east of
the elevators which attracted
most of the crowd for a few
minutes but when the bucket
brigade got in its work and the
local fire team got connection
with the city water the fire was
extinguished without much
damage and the crowd came
baek to town and the sale ring
The purchasers at this sale will
surely realize handsome profits
and make good boosters for the j
sale next year. 1
