Kvery man has liis hours of weakness, but most
of us lengthen them into days.
I
-o-
That far east question is moving westward.
Washington is a good place to halt.
-O-
Any fool may offer criticism, but it takes brains
to get into the class of the criticised.
-0-• ,
In the opinion of some people it will take a lot
of fighting to restore peace to this world.
When spring opens up you can expect greater
activity in Osage county and the city of Pawhuska
than you have ever dreamed of.
-0-
If we simply can't curb our fighting instincts,
let's compromise by declaring war on Mars. Then
we could all die in peace before inventing a method
of attack.
-0-
Pawhuska's foot ball team is taking the honors
from all the teams of the country. We wouldn’t be
surprised but what we will have an all victorious
eastern Oklahoma team this year.
-O-
We don't blame congress for not wanting to
remain in session while the conference for limitation
of arms meet is buzzing along. No one cares to be
completely overlooked and forgotten.
-0-
If times are to be judged by fife number of auto-
mobiles in a community, then they must be pretty
good here in Pawhuska, for dally the streets are
lined with them from one end to another.
---0-
From all appearances and newspaper reports
the conference for the limitation of arms is going
to be a success in spite of the propaganda of the
numerous democratic papers over the country.
--0-
Now that the Midland Valley has started her
operations, we wouldn’t be surprised but what the
Santa Fe will begin to do something toward getting
her road built into the city of Pawhuska and Osage
county.
•-0--
Opportunity may knock once at every man's
door, but the only way you can account for a lazy
man's grasping it is that Opportunity broke down
the door, went into his bedroom, woke him up and
dragged him out.
-0-
There's a great to-do over the fact that China
is unable to pay the paltry $5,000,000 they owe us,
but in the eyes of some of our noble "to-doers'' it
is eminently proper to conceal the billions in debts
some other countries owe us.
-O-
What would you say if someone told you that
Pawhuska would be a city of several more thousand
by this time next year? It’s bound to be as every
indication points to a great increase in the popula-
tion within the next twelve months.
-O--
Lets hope and pray that another war does not
come along now and spoil the prospects of the new
railroad—the Midland Valley spur—Into the oil field?
for Pawhuska. We are due now for this improve-
ment and surely providence will not b'e against us
ihis time.
J. George's “goat" seems to be the ambition of
most everyone in the Osage. The article carried by
the News in our last week’s Issue and the Washing-
ton dispatches have created quite a sensation In
this neck 'o the woods. Much fnvorable comment
coming therefrom.
-O—
Denutifylng of the court house grounds should
soon be started by the county. We understand that
partial arrangements have been made for this neces*
sary step since the completion of the Grandview
paving. This will make one of the most picturesque
spots In the Osage, when the grounds have been
properly landscaped.
-O-
The records show conclusively that Mr. Wright
was the Instigator of the law being passed to limit
the expenditure of the Usages moneys. Now Mr.
Wright seems to be trying to tell the Osages he
doesn't know how that part of the law camo to pass.
Osages are interesting themselves In this matter and
now have a petition boforo the commissioner of In-
dian affairs and to bo presented to Congress lo have
Mr. Wright removed. It Is staled that about ninety-
per coni of the full blood Osages have signed the pe-
ll! ion.
•-O-
Osage county has two new papers,to lls credit
of recent date. One al Ilurbank, slarted by F, I).
Smith, former advertising man lor the Dally Oapl- x
lul and Hubert Seeds, who was employed lit the Capi-
tal for several months as pressman. This new Issue
Is called the Burbank Tribune and starts out with
ten pages. The other one Is the Apporson Hustler
brought Into existence ho If. 8. Hcxiout, formerly or
Wynona anti Pershing, Oklahoma. Both are neat
appearing papers and we. predict will do well In the
new fields recently opened up by the bringing In
of many good oU wells. Here's success to you, boys.
Forget your last year’s hat. You will look a lot
handsomer to the dqaler If you wear a new one.
--Q—-
All women are born beautiful—in the eyes of
their mothers, and some in their own minors mind.
-O-
Seek not to lift the veil of the future. Your
coming sins might scare you into taking the back
track.
PROSPERITY ON EVERY HAND.
Most everywhere in the city of Pawhuaka you
are a mind to go you will see signs of prosperity.
One individual, who has been out of the city for the
past three months until last week remarked to the
writer that he never saw such prosperity and such
a change in any town in his life and that Pawhuska
was the only city in the southwest that was showing
Ilils progress.
When any city has a bunch ol’ boosters like our
own little Pawhuska lias, there is bound to be some-
thing doing all (he time. That is the motto that the
city's commissioners have taken. And from the way
improvements are being made in tho old town we
guess that they are making good that motto.
---O--
NOW THEY SAY FOUR DOLLAR OIL
There has been some talk of four dollar oil
among the oil men of the country (ho past few days
since this product went to two dollars a barrel.
Some months ago wo predicted that oil would be
two dollars a barrel by the first of the year. It is
hero two months ahead of time. We are satisfied
with this price for oil. We only hope that it stays at
this price and does not drop for several years.. At
two dollars a barrel oil makes the producers good
money. It makes work for the laboring class of
men and from every hand you can hear the men
say they are satisfied with this price for their pro-
ducts.
The News has another prediction to make and
that is that crude oil will be worth three dollars a
barrel by the first of May. This price will cause
a great influx of strangers into this country, with
the bringing in of large producers which are bound
to be found within in the next few months on the
west side, and we dare say that several ol' them will
be close to Pawhuska.
--0-
EXCELLENT ROADS.
The writer went to Arkansas City, Kas the first
of this week and from Pawhuska to that city we
traversed some of the finest country roads it has
been our privilege to travel over. The worst roads
to that city are between here and Timber Hill, and
considering the amount of traffic over this stretch
of road, one cannot help but wonder how it is kept
in as good condition as it is. Between Arkansas City
and Wlndfield, Kansas we drove over some rock
roads which were exceptionally good and we learn
if sucli roads are kept up as they should be they
will prove entirely satisfactory and give the desired
service. From an engineer ot' no mean ability we
learn that rock roads can he built in this country
lor ten or twelve thousand dollars a mile, not count-
ing tho grading. Also this engineer tells us that in
order to keep sucli roads in good condition the coun-
ty should for a number of years place a tax of about
two hundred dollars a mile on this road to create a
working fund with which lo keep the road up. If
this is done and at the first sign of wearing in any-
place, tlie road is repaired, then rock roads will
Prove a success and bring returns on the investment.
There are several ways to figure road building.
Some people look at it from a stand point of pleas-
ure. Other look at it from a standpoint of service
and still others look at it from a standpoint of re-
turns in the money invested. In order that the coun-
ty may get the most for her money, there is but one
sensible way in which to look at the matter of hard
surfacing the roads of Osage county, and that is on
the most dollars returned trom the money invested.
And this engineer said that rock roads were the
thing for Osage county to build. We have the rock
right on most of the roads. Chat witli which to help
construct them can be secured for a very small
item. About all this costs is the freight from the
mines in Joplin, Mo.
If we can build good roads, which will stand up
and bring returns on the money invested, and serve
the most people, with proper care and construction,
for twelve thousand dollars a'mile, then rock roads
are the thing for Osage county to build. There is
a vast amount of difference between twelve thousand
dollars and thirty to fifty thousand dollars.
Osage county wants good roads. We need them
worse than any county In the state, considering the
fact that there is so much heavy traffic over out-
thoroughfares, and we must build them as Inst as
possible. We must profit by tint experience of
other counties. Wo must look up their mistakes
and avoid them so far as possible.
-O-
The new railroad building to the Ilurbank field
Is going lo be a great help to the business enterpris-
es of Pawhuska. It means that within ninety days
there will be hundreds of men going to and from
their work in this field over tho new road. It means
that Pawhuska will have a "dinner bucket brigade"
something that this city has long needed.

Undoubtedly the Midland Valley has unlimited
faith in the future of Pawhuska, for after spending
several thousands of dollars here In improving their
yards here, they are now extending tlie line via. a
