of the conventions held here Thursday
by both the Democratic and republican
purtlea of Arizona,Marl* Smith of Tuc-
son was named as the democratic can-
didate for congress and \V. C. Cooper
of Globe was named as the republican
candidate. This is the eighth time
Mark Smith has been nominated by
democrats of Arizona, being first
named in 188G. Both parties adopted
an Identical resolution against joint
statehood as follows: "We are unalter-
ably opposed to Joint statehood be-
tweet. Arizona and New Mexico and
would prefer lo remain a territory for-
ever than to have a joint state with
New Mexico."
Lincoln as a Lawyer.
A leader of the Lincoln party told
