Thcro is no cnUBo for alarm about
the temporary softness of tho Third
avenuo paving says W. II. Kolts' su-
perintendent of tho company that did
tho work. For a tlmo tho paving
seemed to bo very soft at tho crossings
and even stuck to tho shoes of pas-
scrsby. Mr. Kolts ays that all new
csphalt-paving does this the first year
but there Is then an evaporation of a
certain Ingredient of tho top coat
which leaves it pllnblo but still very
dry. Wednosday night Mr. Kolts had
the entire street thoroughly swept and
fiprlnklcd a lot of 'very flno sand over
the entlro streetwhich will gradually
wear Into tho asphalt and make it
much better.

Tho Register of Deed's office reports
that tho recording of Warranty Dcods
for thomonth of April 1913 was fully
eao third In advance of the number of
Hko Instruments filed for the some
saonth last year while In April th's
year tho number of Chattle Mortgages
filed was considerably less than was
tiled In the same month last year.
This condition would appear to show
a Increased activity in real estate
markotlng OTer last year and a dc
crease In the number of people who
have to mortgage their crops and other
battles to live through the summer.
ASSESSOR HAS NEW ASSISTANT
court has collected I2C6.O0 off of two
men for peddling whiskey contrary to
the laws of Oklahoma and both men
will In addition to that sum of money
donato some hard labor to the county
on the road gangs.
Dan Maddox was fined $100.00 and
30 days paid in $156.80 flno and costs
and works thirty days on the road.
R E. LaRue paid a $100 fine and will
give tho county 60 days of his valuable
labor on the county roads.

Wednesday night of this week at mo

court wherein Jake Slmms of Durant
la charged with obtaining property un
der a falso pretence tho complalalng

The Information state that o Sum-
day May 11 that Jake Slmms secured
from W. L. Sauls theust of a horse
and buggy for tho considsratloa of
$4.00 representing to W. L. Saula .that
the rig waB for tho use of Albert Klrby
who would use the rig anil pay Sauls
for Its use. Tho complaint tbea states
that this statement was fraudulant and
Intentionally so on the part of Blmms
thereby depriving Sauls the use aad
Income of tho rig $4.00 as otherwise
without the falso repreeeatatloa he
Saula would not have allowed Slmras
the use of the rig.
Slmms was arrested Monday aad
mado bond In the sum of $2.00 furnish
ed by C. J. Cobb.

trict court as follows:
M. M. Grimes vs. Ed Grimes.
Arklo May Hamilton vs. Drew Ham-
ilton. Emma Rose vs. William Rose.
Tho petition of tho latter named
caso states that the plaintiffs hus-
band assaulted her sd that scars were
left on her body and that he abused
G. L. (Lacy) Grimes was in the
city Monday from Achlllo and reports
that on Saturday night when ho
reached Denlson from Achille In his
auto he wea accosted by a big pollce-
man and forced to stop his .car nnd
waa placed under arrest for being
without a number on his car. He
states that his number was on the car
and was lost somewhere between Den
lson and Achille and ha so Informed
the officer but no excuses were ac-
ceptcd and he was forced to pay a
fine of $9.75. He proved tie said that
his car had been numbered and vriw
registered in Denicon but this proved
of no avail. The matter Is being in-
vestigated by the Auto Club of Denl-
bob who claim that a great Injustice
has been done Mr. Grimes.
BIFFLE REMAINS ALDERMAN
Jim Blffle newly elected alderman
from Ward Three to Bucceed V. C
Phillips and who did not qualify when
the others did handed in his reslgna-
tloa last week assigning as the reason
that his business keeps him out of the
city so much that be could not attend
to the Job. He withdrew his resigna-
tion this week however and will qual
ify at once.
An Invitation Is extended you to
take part in the coming Horse Show
July 4th and Gth.
In all matters of entertainment tho
cooperation nnd assistance of tho la-
dles directly or indirectly is necessary
to insure success and tho ladles of
Durant and of all' Dryan County arc
requested to Interests themselves in
this event which Is strictly a "Homo
Affair" and high class entertainment
Nor are the little "tots" barred they
too nre 'Invited to decorate their ponies
for tho parade and ride In the show
ring. It Is not only correct but fash
ionable for ladles to ride and drive
their horses nt theso exhibitions. The
Horse Show season for 1913 opened
most auspiciously In Brooklyn and
was most unamlnously heavily entered
and attended by ladles. The Horse
Show is not a circus but a exhibition
of horse flesh of different types and of
horsemanship which tend to elevate
tho breeding of stock and encourage
correct handling of the horse compar-
ed with the spelling match or the com-
mencement exercises and you have It;
a Horfo Show is both interesting and
Instructive.
One of. the pleasant surprises of the
Wilson Administration is the interest
in the horses which the President and
his daughters have manifested. Miss
Jesse Wilson and her friend Miss.
Bowe mado a hit in Washington re
cently at the riding and driving club
there both young ladles clearing the
Jumpo at 4 feet 6 Inches. Miss Elinor
Wilson the Presidents youngest daugh-
ter afterwards went to tho old Benn
ington Race Track ana exercised a
number of Lieut Rockwell's race
horses.
Miss Lula Long wealthy and prom-
inent In Kansas City has becomo fa-
mous for hoi; superior horsemanship
and personal management of her
splendid stables and our most cultur-
ed women every whore are taking a
practical part lnt ho Horse Show en-
tertainments Is evident by a race meet
and Horse Show recently glvon to 500
guests by a prominent lady In Kentuc-
ky on her estate close to Lexington.
People of distinction from all ovor thq
U. S. attended and although it was
strictly a social and prlvato affair it
was conducted on rigid orthodox rac-
ing lines. Mrs. La Bus the hostess is
an Ideal type of woman.
It Is said of her she is a devoted
wife and mother and after she has
looked well after the comfort of her
husband and children If there be any
time left she spends It with her horses.
