our public school matters have beon kept from public view
tax-payers generally are Retting anxious to know what disposition
has been made of the large amount of money voted for the three
school bnildings and for the maintenance of the schools.
It is conceded that a free democratic form of government can
bo maintained only by an intelligent and virtuous people. So im-
iWrtaQOfi nro nnr ticonli with the importance of good schools that
w ffiov will overlook many weaknesses without complaint. A com-
nin:- i.n.imon.. nttnn nrnvnnts rnnpti'Hnn nf nrrors.
Citizens generally think that school board mectingsshould be
held in the school building where patrons can be seated and feel
free to attend. It is claimed that the most important business
even the election of Superintendent teachers and janitors has
been transacted at hastily called meetings at unexpected times
without any notice to patrons of the mpeting and their purpose
and sometimes without legal notice to all members of the board.
If the patrons were notified through the city papers of the
place and time of board meetings and the principal object of the
meeting they could hear the discussion of the different matters
and would be bettor satisfied. The city papers have offered to an-
nouce the meetings and to publish minutes of board meetings.
The following queries can be heard almost any day:
1 Whv is not the north- building commenced?
2. Why is not the east-building completed?
3. Who planned the West building its blackboards toilets etc.'
4. Whose bank account was increased by the excavating and
concrete work?
5 Why was there such a hurry about olecting superintendent
and teachors?
G. Why are the teachers held up for $25 each to insure their
return?
7. Are teachers graded and paid according to Qualification?..
8- Why is our high school so small compared with its cost?
9. Why arc four principals and a yard police needed at one
building?
10 It looks bad for Anadarko when parents are publicly ad-
vised to not believe their own children. Why was it done?
11. Why are broad and inviting fields of agriculture horticul-
ture art science mechanics physics and chemistry comparatively
overlooked when there u'e so many attractive and remunerative
situations calling loudly for young men and women who are quali-
fied for the work? In these industrial pursuits there is no waste
of time money or energy for the exercise required develops and
trains for usefulness all the physicial intellectual and moral
powers.
It is currently reported that the Superintendent of Construction
is still drawing ?3.50 per day and that for months the board paid
125 a month for janitor service at the west building also that the
bpard was unable to fulfill its part of the contract with the teach-
oleand they had to peddle warrants and discount them.
It is also rumored that each teacher has been asked to deposit
S25 of her hard earned salary with the secretary of the school
board until next year. This seems like a very strange way of do-
ing public business. The public has a legal right to know about
public matters. CITIZENS
