QUEENSLAND'S WATER TREES
Wlie Provision of Nature That Is One
of the Curiosities of the
Region.
One of the curiosities In nnturnl his-
tory In the colony of Queensland In
the rolslon by nntnro of n supply of
water In the roots of certain trees
On theso roots tho nhorlglnes former-
ly depended for their wnter for sev-
eral months of tho yoar
There are seernl kinds of trees In
Queensland from which water can
lie obtained Including threo species
of cuenljptiiB. and tho Iturrajong The
eucalypti consists of a Kiim which Is
tho largest of the back country trees
ft box and mnllee The first named Is
the most preferred ns yielding the
greatest quantity This treo resem-
bles the red gum In appearance the
leaves being a little narrower nnd or
n sllery color It grows chlolly on
sandy or light lonmy soil and throws
out numerous lateral roots at a depth
of about nine Inches from the sur-
face of the ground. The position of
these roots was ascertained by the
blacks by repeatedly Jabbing the
points of a spear or sharpened stick
In the boft earth at a dlstanco of about
six or eight feet from tho trunk of
tho tree The soil was then removed
with a wooden shoel for some 20
f'et or more and tho root cut off at
either end This was then cut up
Into lengths of about IS Inches the
bark knocked off and tho lengths stood
on end In some receptacle to contain
water In mau eases the blacks used
a bag made of tho entile skin of the
mnle wallaby As soon ns nil these
piece. weie placed on end the opern
tor beginning with tho first placed
put the end In his mouth nnd by n
vigorous puff expelled the remaining
water The size of tho toots chosen
was with the bark on. about tho thick-
ness of n man's wrist. The larger
ones being more woody and less por
oub contain little or no wnter The
wnter Is beautifully clear cool and
free fiom nnj unpleasant tasto or
smell

PLEASANT FOR THE TRAVELER
Russian Method of Safeguarding Czar

noted life insurnnge manager was an

"Mr Ingersoll knew the rates all

very high. Mr Ingersoll once ex-
plained to me with a story why this
was.
"A trnclur In Russia ho said no-

High Title Denied Washington.
A friend calls attention to the fact
that Washington although comman-
der In . chief during the Revolution
and again in 1798 during the French
war which did not really happen did
not bear the title of full general. On
July f. 1798 President Adams nomin-
ated hlra "to be lieutenant-general ard
commandor in chief." This was fol-
lowed by the act ol March 3. 1?S of
which tho ninth section read "that a
commander of the army of the "United
Slates shaft bo appointed nnd com-
missioned by the style of 'general of
tho armies of the United States' and
that tho i.ro.wnt oiuco and title of
lieutenant general shall thereafter be
abolished.' Presldont Adams Jealous
for the executive preoatlve as com-
mander In chief made no appoint-
ment under tb' act and Washington
died as lieutei 1 it n-n'eral.
