Then ho wont down to tho homo

Here he was always welcome. Here
ho told tho story of his missionary ad

IS 2110.7. The Eloquent Apollos
When Paul left Corinth at tho clos
of his second Journoy. his friends
Aqpflir nnd Priscllla wont with him
is far ns rphosus. Uoforo Paul v
'erod upon his longer work at Eph' sir
here came n Christian Jew of KrPii
Mononco (v. 25) "knowing only th"
up Ism of John; tho goipnl of rein
nnp" and forgiveness nnd Chrls'nn
fnia'a. and of Jesus who proclaim"'!
'ho kingdom of heaven at hind and
worked many miracles of love an
died on tho cross tho Btory which was
lo'.d in tho earlier gospels.
These things Priscllla and Aqulla
"xpounded to him. Then ho went to
Orecco (v. 27) nnd "helped them much
which hnd belloved through grace."
Of this Paul onco speaks In his letter
to CorlnthJ'I planted Apollos watered
God ga'vo tho Increase." (1 Cor. 3:6).
Paul's Preaching nnd Teaching.
Vs. 8-10. First. In the Jowlsh syna-
gogue. Threo months. To Jews. As
usual Paul began with tho Jews who
were best prepared to receive the
Gospel. "And. spnko boldly." It re
Wired no llttlo courage to take tho
unpopular side which had so often
brought him Into trouble
Second. In the school of Tyrannus
Two years. To Gentiles. "Disputing."
discouraging arguing "dally" and not
meroly on tho Sabbath "in the school
of one Tyrannus." Nothing Is known
positively about this man.
"Continued . . . two years" In
idtlltlon to the three months In the
synagogue "All they which dwelt In
Asln" tho Iloman provlnco of Asia of
which Ephesus was tho capital.
"Heard tho word." Paul had with him
a number of helpers as Timothy
lirnsttis Titus etc.
Two Kinds of Testimonials to the
Power and Value of the Gospol. Vs.
11-22. In addition to tho holy conduct
nnd noblo spirit exhibited In tho or-
dinary dally life there were two out-
ward and visible testimonies to the
truth nnd power of the Gospel. First.
MIrncles of healing and help. "God
wrought special miracles." "Dy tho
hands of tho Instrumentality of
"Paul." In Ephesus tho center of
magic and wltchcrnft special power
was given Paul to work miracles that
conquered them In their own strong-
hold. He actually did what the
sorcerers prctonded to do.
Self-denial for the Cause of Christ.
Doing right at great cost. "Many that
believed came and confessed" that
they hnd been using magical prac-
tices but now realizing that thoy
were wrong "showed their deeds" by
publicly confessing and renouncing
all such heathen practices by which
doubtless they ha4 bcon making
money.
"Many of them" referring to those
who had been magicians previous to
their conversion "which used curious
arts" such as magic Incantations
sleight of hand charms secret knowl-
edge of choralstry hypnotism. Jug-
glery and everything by which thoy
had deceived tho people.
Those men nnd women were In the
habit of carrying nbout on their per
sons ns charms or amulets to shield
them from danger nnd from harm or
to procure them good fortune In their
undertakings. Wo read how Croesus
when on his funeral pile ropeated
theso "Epheslan spells."
Light from the Orient. In tho
Vienna museum nro some very old
manuscripts called tho Fayum manu-
scripts some of thorn dated 1200
years I). C discovered a few year
ago In Egypt. Among them are largv
quantities of magical writings with
tho Hebrew formulas.
