FORMATION OF REELFOOT LAKE.
8tranne History of Spot Where Night
Riders' Crime Occurred.
The physical lilitory of Ileelfoot
lake of night rider fntno Ik not with-
out a certain Interest or lti own. The
lako came Into existence as the result
of n serlos of qnrthnuskes which be-
gan In December 1811 and continued
until Juno 1812.
Somo autliorltlos say that tho enrth-
quakos merely heaved up a great rldg
or land ncroaa the pntl of the Ileelfoot
river which nine Into tho Mississippi
and tltnt this dam caused the wnter to
back up and broaden out and form a
Inko; but tho favorite account In the
neighborhood Is to tho effect that the
ground sank springs wero opened up
neighboring creeks diverted from their
course and the overflowing wnters of
the Mississippi rtished In during tho
Hood season of the spring of 1S12.
It Is said that for an hour and a
hnlf the waters of the Mississippi
flowed up-lilll while Ailing up tho de-
pression caused by tho oarthmmkos.
Iloth accounts likely have this much of
truth In them that the ontlre contlgtir-
aton of tho ground was changed by
the earthquakes. Dig lake west of
tho Mississippi Is said to hnve been
formed In the same way nt tho same
time.
Ileelfoot lake Is sixteen or eighteen
miles long writes Don Marquis In
Unole Remus' Magazine very Irregu
Inr In shape and covers from 85000 to
10000 acres of land. It varies In width
from a mile In some places to four or
five miles In others. The northern end
Is extended hy a series of sloughs and
bayous Into Kentucky.
The most distinctive featuro of the
lake's appearance tho fdnturo which
first Impresses and stays longest with
the observer's fancy Is n certain gro-
tesque effect as If u sot of crazy men
had been operating n pllcdrlvor thoro
for the last century for the trunks
stumps mid stark branches of dead
trcos stick out of It ovorywhoro In
dosolato parody of somo such human
handiwork; far below tho surfaco tho
Huh dart nmong tho bolos and branches
where the squirrels frolicked a hun-
dred yoars ago.
Thuro aro beautiful spots hero and
thoro "but tho effect as a whole Is not
beautiful; at Its host when the mist
rises and myriad protruding tree
trunks are whlto nnd ghostly In tho
moonlight. It Is weird; tho gciiornl re-
membrance Is of somothlng uncouth.
It la n kind of sloven lnko that has
preferred to sit down with Its hnlr un-
combed all day long but at night It
dees manage to nchlevo a touch of
wizard dignity.
To Sift Nation's History.
This country Is now rich In Its his-
torical literature but of tho recent
output most has como from west of
tho Hudson nnd north of the Potomac
nnd Ohio. Wo can now study with
minutest dotnll almost every phase
and period of our history with tho
polo exception of the south which Is
Into In coming to the front with Its
own records. Tho southern people
havo been content to mnko history
rathor thnn record It and for this rea-
son mnterlals aro moagor. Hut tuore
are In tho south writers who nro now
taking high rank nnd of whom much
more may bo expected. Wo aro bo
ginning for tho llrst tlmo to get somu
studies of" tho reconstruction period
for instance out of which an opinion
mny bo formed Instead of bclii7 taken

Natural Gas In India.
Consul Gunornl William II. Michael
of Calcutta writes that 20 miles from
Chittnguiig natural gnu Issuos from a
crevice in the ground in considerable
quantity. It lins been burning so long
that tho oldest Inhabitant enn glvo
no Idea of when or how it wiu set on
tiro. The Kenctat belief nmong tho
natives Is fiut the gas has beep on
tin for centuries. At anyv rate the
gas tlow has ltu horning as fur hack
as any records have been kept by
white people.
It Is now suggested and some steps
have been taken to carry out the sug-
gestion that the Are be extinguished
ud the gas be brought under control
unci piped down to Chlttagong for
lighting and fuel and power purposes.
The ciUsetts of Chlttagong have con
eluded that It wouM be cheaper to utll
