On December 17 1000 it was
announced through tho Associ-
ated Press that Mr. Bryan was
about to begin tho publication of
a weekly nowspapor to bo known
as Tho Commoner. Subscript-
ions began coming in immediate-
ly? and soon taxed tho resources
at hand to proporly caro for
them. On January 23 1001 tho
first number of tho Tho Com-
moner made its appearance
Tho paper then consisted of eight
pages but boforo tho ond of tho
first year it w.ib inoroased in
sizo to twolvo pngos and during
tho second year to sixteen pages.
Tho circulation of Tho Common-
er has mado a stoady growth
each weok showing an increaso
ovor tho preceding wook until
tho paper as it noars tho .end of
its second yoar has a circula
tion of 140000.
Tho yoar 1003 will bo full of
interest to thoso who aro study-
i governmental problems.
During tho noxt twolvo months
tho linos will bo fonnod upon
which tho noxt national cam-
paign will bo fought. During
this period it will be decided
whether tho gold-corporation
oloment known as "tho reorgan-
izes" will gain control of tho
democratic party or whothor tho
party will remain truo to demo-
cratic nrinoiplos as thoy aro sot
froth in tho Kansas City plat-
