announced through tho Associ-
ated Press that Mr. Bryan was
about to begin tho publication of
a weekly newspaper to bo known
as Tho Commoner. Subscript-
ions begun coming in immediate-
ly and soon taxed tho resources
at hand to properly caro for
them. On January 23 1001 tho
first number of tho Tho Com-
moner mudo its appearanco.
Tho paper thon connisted of eight
pages but boforo tho end of tho
first year it was increased in
sizo to twelvo pages and during
tho second year to sixteen pages.
Tho circulation of Tho Common-
er has mado a steady growth
each week showing an incroaso
ovor tho preceding wook until
tho papor as it noars tho end of
its second year has a circula-
tion of 140000.
Tho year 1003 will bo full of
intorost to thoso who aro study-
if? governmental probloms.
During tho next twelvo months
tho linos will bo formed upon
which tho next national cam-
paign will bo fought. During
this period it will bo decided
whothor tho gold-corporation
element known as "tho reorgan-
izes" will gain control of tho
democratic party or whothor tho
party will romain truo to domo-
oratio principles as thoy aro sot
froth in tho Kansas City plat-
form. It is tho purpose of Tho Com
moner to carry on a campaign of
education and organization to tho
