On December 17 1000 it was
announced through tho Associ-
ated Press that Mr. Bryan was
about to begin tho publication of
a weekly newspaper to bo known
as Tho Commoner. Subscript-
ions began coming in immediate-
ly and soon taxed tho resources
at hand to properly caro for
them. On January 23 1001 tho
first number of tho Tho Com-
moner mado its appearance.
Tho pupor then consisted of eight
pagesU)ut beforo tho end of tho
first year it was increased in
sizo to twelve pages and during
tho second year to sixteen pages.
Tho circulation of Tho Common-
er lias mado a stendy growth
each week showing an incrcaso
over tho preceding week until
tho papor as it nears tho end of
its second year has a circula-
tion of 140000.
Tho yoar 1003 will bo full of
;ntorost to those who aro study-
t; governmental problems.
During tho next twelve months
tho linos will bo formed upon
which tho noxt national cam-
paign will bo fought. During
this poriod it will bo decided
whether the gold -corporation
element known as "the reorgan-
izes" will gain control of tho
democratic party or whether tho
party will remain true to demo-
craticjprinciples as they aro set
froth in tho Kansas City plat-
form. It is tho purpoBfij of Tho Com-
moner to carry on a campaign of
education and organization to tho
end that democratic principles
may trinmph;and thinking mon
and women of whatever politi-
cal faith who dosiro to study
both sidos of pending quostions
will find in its colums much val-
uablo information.
