A Curious Rainfall.
Ono day not long ago rnln fell at
tho town of Pcrlors In France for
several hours. The rainwater collect-
ed looked llko )yo or like water con-
taining clay. It was odorless of
earthy taste and slightly snllnc. After
twonty-four hours It prcclpltatPtl an

previous rnln had thoroughly wetted
tho ground this phonotr on Is not
to bo oxplalnod by supposing that a
largo amount of slllclcus dust had
been carried Into tho air by winds
and subsequently prcclplt ted by rain.
Tho most probable explanation Is
that the wator of tho preceding rains
lny In very shallow pools on tho sur-
face of &I1U.OU8 ground and that by
high winds (which woro observed) tho
wator was raised into tho air and sub-
sequently descended as rain.

A troop ship lately put In nt Malta
a fow hours anc ono of tho ser-
vants went on shoro to pay a visit
Is u Roldlcr son who was statlonod
there. When ho returned ho carrlod
small woolly dog under ono arm It
was nn engaging young thing but
tho quartermaster steeled his heart
and shook his head.
"Ofllclal number of dogs already on
-hip" said ho uncompromisingly.
Tho sergeant tried palaver but It
Availed nothing so after looking per-
plexed for a space he ro-entereil the
boat in which ho had come off to tho
ship and returned to shoro. When
ho camo bacit ho carried a bird cago
containing a strnngo looking creature.
It was covored with gay feathers but
It had four togs.
"Can't pas thnt thero dog on board
ship." said tho soutry and tho quar-
termnsttr bore out this verdict.
"Dog sir?" echoed tho sergeant In
surprise and disgust. "Can't you toll
n Maltose bird of paradlso from 11 dog?
And you that up In feathers that per-
fessors consult with yo!"
"Pass John Smith and one Mnltoso
Dlrd of paradise!" sang out tho quar-
ormaster. with a broad grin.
"There ain't ahy order agolnst tak-
ing birds on hoard as I knows of" re-
marked John Smith ns ho camo over
tho side. And his expression of tri-
umph did not fndo even when In tho
course of a fow days the feathers on

A MATTER OF BUSINESS.
Peculiar Russian Custom.
Henry Norman In his recently pub-
lished book. "All tho H"sslns" tolls
this story: 'Ono day 1 remarked to
a Russian friend with whom I was din-
ing what an excellent servant he had.
'Yes' ho said 'and thero a also some-
thing romarkahle about him that you
don't see. That man has been kUsed
by a czar.' 'When why?' 1 asked
In astonlshmont. 'Somo years ago'
ropllod my friend 'ho wns on sontry
duty In tho garden of nn Imperial pal-
ace and In tho early Easter morning
the empcro- camo out lone. "Vos-
kress Chrlstos!" "Christ Is risen"
said tho sentry ns custom prescribes
anu 11 is uiuu prescnucu mat you 1
shall salute with a kUs tho first per-
son who tells you tho good nows. Such
customs In Russia aro binding upon
emptror or peasant alike.' It was a
charming story nnd well Illustrates
tho comparative nearness of top and !
bottom In Russian life."
A Snrewd Imposition.
A frlond of Mr. Norman told him
of n traveling Impostor ho had seen
who went from vlllago to village offer
ing for a small fee to show some hairs
from tho head of tho Virgin Mary.
One porson nt n timo wns admitted a
small parcel was produced and many
wrappings takon off In succession un-
til In tho last paper of all the visitor
was Invited to gaze upon tho miracu-
lous hairs. The papor was quite
empty and th" peasant would nvor
that he saw nothing Then tho Im-
postor would sorrowfully explain that
the hairs woro Invisible to sinful eyes
and that only the pious could soo
thorn. In order to ebcapo tho reproach
his customers would loudly and
proudly assert that they saw them
clearly and so ho did a brink trado.
Ncrjro Roustabout Fully Understood
the Situation.
A kind-hearted Ihgton woman
jiald a vlBlt to New Orleans while tho
shipping season on the river wns at
its height and as tho lc ding or un-
loading of a big river boat Is ono of
the most Interesting things Imaginable
to watch sho went ono dny to tho
levee where a steamboat ono of tho
largest alloat was discharging Its
cargo. The mnto of tho vessel atood
at the gangplank and directed the
operations of the negro roustabouts.
Ho was loud-voiced as a mate should
be nnd he bellowed and roared and
swore nnd now and then whacked
somo unusually slow or stupid negro
with a spar. Ono negro received 30
many blows that the" Washington
woman's sympathies woro aroused.
When sho could onduro the mate's
brutality to'-ard him no longer sho
walked over to whoro tho negro stood
and spoke to him.
"Why do you allow that man to
strike you and curso you as ho does?"
she asked.
Tho negro looked at her In surprlso
and then showed all his teeth In a
grin.
'Law mlsa" said he chuckling. "I
don't mind him. Ho's paid for doln'
that same as I's paid for doln' this."
The Country Dance In Ireland.
"Tho country denco tho crotss-roads

years ago" said the Rev. Father Field-
ing of Chicago "Is again In full
swing In tho old country much to tho
delight of tho lovers of an Irish Ire-
land. A puritanical spirit totnlly allon
to Irish character" ho continued
"aroso among tho Irish clergy a doc-
ado ago and overy enjoyment nnd
pastime of tho young country folk was
frowned upon. Tho grer' work dono
by tho Gaelic league In Ireland has
changed conditions. The leaguo now
pays Irish pipers and fiddlers to play
