Whether the community in which
you livo is one where the "oldest
inhabitant" came when a mere child
or in the nuw country where the
earliest settlers have scarcely had
time to become accustomed to tho
existing conditions there are always
certain classes of individuals to be
found.
We are all acquainted with the
woman who "hasn't a minute to
stay'' but who stays and stays
though always on the point of leav-
ing and prevents you from going
ahead with work which yon would
feel justified in doing if you know
she would stay for several hours.
But of course it would be impolite
when she tells you she "can't stay
a minute" to keep on with your
work as though you could not lose
a moments time in order to enjoy
her company. But soon the morn
ing is gone your work is unfinished
the children arc coining home to
dinner which is not even begun
and if you would express your in-
nermost thoughts instead of urging
your caller "now do come again
soon you would tell uer mat you
were always too busy to receive cal
lers in the morning. Then there is
the man who wants to tell everyone
how the city the county the state
and the Union should bo governed
and intrudes his views upon you at
the most inopportune moments
when your mind is deeply engrossed
with your own affairs and you don't
care sixpence just at that moment
how national affairs are conducted.
LWo wonder wjiy iujs-not consid
ered "polite" to tell such a man to
go hence and trouble iitf no more?
And huv'nt you met the woman who
has an overwhelming desire to be
"in society" and will sacrifico
everything for that purpose? She
is invited to teas receptions card
parties etc and cannot resist the
temptation to go in order to show
her neighbors that she is "in soci
ety."
But there comes a time when she
must make some return for the
courtesis shown her and there is
where tho trouble begins. In these
days of high prices it costs some-
thing to entertain even in a very
modest way and for several weeks
previous to the great occasion the
would-be-hostcss in order to com-
pare favorably with her neighbor
who is well able to entertain on a
grand scale will skimp and save
and deny her little children those
little treats which delight the child-
ish heart and make childhood days
a pleasant memory in tho after
years of trials bard.work and heart
aches. Why should "society" bo
considered of more importance than
a happy homo and a clear con-
science? Then there is tho woman
who though known to be in very
modest circumstances labors under
the impression that every one ox-
pcots her to dress as expensively as
tho others iu her particular "set."
Her husband soon learns that peace
in his homo is only to bo obtained
by keeping his wife constantly sup-
plied with fine raiment and bo he
works early and late constantly
planning and scheming trying
every "get rich scheme" that pre-
sents itself constantly .worried and
harrassed by business cares his lit'o
wasted in a vain attempt to appease
this insatiable 'desire for display of
finery which has wrecKod many
homes and will continue to do so
until such women can be brought
to hco tho folly of spending their
lives for no better purpose than
striving to outdress jheir friends.
"All is not gold that glitters" and
tho home life of the gay society
butterfly is not alwayB happy and
the wife and mother who is happy
iu her own homo circle though not
surrounded with the luxuries which
her neighbors may possess often
has no cause to envy them. Be
content with your station in life
unloss you can rise beyond it hon-
estly and with an unburdened conscience.

Delay the Malls.
We would respectfully suggest
that it would be a good plan for
one of the police officers to be on
hand occasionally to enforce the
law in regard to. the obstruction of
the crossings by the trains. Yester-
day morning just after tho arrival of
the two passenger trains an unus-
ually long freight train pulled in
and caused quito a delay not only
to tho passengers on their way up
town but also to tho U. S. mail.
There is a law regulating this mat-
ter and it should bo enforced.
College Fixtures Have Conic.
Prof. J. N. Clarke no longer has
that harassed worried expression
of countenance as the cars con-
taining the furnituro and apparatus
for the college arrived this morn-
ing after being delayed somewhere
on tuo roau tor about a week.
There will now be nothing to hin-
der tho progress of the college
work and we sincerely hope it will
be a success.
