REPUBLICAN
ECONOMY.
What has become of the
Promises that they
Made to Us.
EXPENSES ARE INCREASED
Cheap Government Less of it and
at Greatly lnoreared
Cost-
The present city administration was
elected last spring on a platform
pleding itself to an economical city
government. Platforms and declara-
tions of principles look well at least on
paper. Tho pcop'o who elected these
city olllcials no doubt were honest in
the belief that they would get what
was promised that the Republican
would make some elTort to carry out
their promises. Hut in tho light of
past exj)crience Republican pledges
amount to but little after the election
is over. Willi them promises are
easily made and soon forgotten. The
average Republican has no more re
spect or veneration for his pledge
than ho lias for the rights und inter-
ests of the commuuity he is chosen to
rule.
The leading bait used by the Re-
publicans to catch tho gullible voter
last spring was that the city couucil
should servo without pay. This would
represent a saving of $00 per month
und looked as big to the city voter as
a steamboat iu a fog. It was thrown
out to catch the unwary voter und It
served its purpose. So far as'that
proposition was. concerned the letter
if not the spirit of it wus carried out.
So fur so good.
j But let us go a little further. One
of the first things the council did was
I to increase tho police force by two
1 members at a cost of $1)0 per month
This force was totally unnecessary as
I evidenced by Cnief of Police Al Bur-
chett who told the mayor in tho pres
ence of the council that he did not
need them and never did in fact had
no use for .hem Whatever.
Again the old eouncil in orderto
curtail expenses and .sao the money
of the tax payers secured a lease of
property on (ith street between B and
C and built at a cost of about $400 an
engine house with a room above for a
council chamber. TJ10 present council
instead of using this large roomy well
ventilated room centrally located
rented a room in the MeAninch b'llld
j ing on the south side of tho square for
no legitimate purpose as fur as can bo
1 learned except it happened to bo more
convenient for the bosses. And every
thing must bo so placed as to suit
their pleasure and convenience. Tho
Democratic council spent 400 for
quarters so save the city SleO a jcar.
.
But our Republican council elected ou
a platform of economy deemed this a
too Insignificant a sum to bo worthy of
their notice cast it away und rent a
room for $lfi u month to please the
bosses. The conveniences of the bos-
sos comes a little high but of course
they must have it and tho tax papers
must foot tho bill und in the mean-
while tho Vooni provided by their pred-
ecessors lies idle.
But tills furnishes only a sample of
Republican economy. They save a
dimo and squander a dollar then rise
in their places of high promineuco
straighten the kinks out of their ana-
tomy look wise and say here wo are
oh ye worms of the earth fall on your
faces in tho dirt and worship at our
feet the feet of the high und mighty.
Wo are the only ones in tho now
couutry who have tho Intellect suf
ficient to run this community and
squander tho public monies on a plat-
form of economy.
Again a little farther down the line
wt And tho school board paying $7.50
to ono Geo. W. Bugg for his profes'
slonal services. Wo never kept the
minutes of such a weighty body so can
not sneak from experience liut wo
should liko to ask what special quail'
llcatlons are necessary to enable 1
man to earu $7.50 for about two hours
work wrlttlng perhaps two pages of
minutes. And this same man used his
voto and what littlo influence ho may
possess to allow a man who has spent
Mvo eurs 111 college as mmi eurs In
school wotk and four or Ihe thousand
dollars getting ready to do his work
the niagniiliut it sum of id'i tier month
for twontj dus work of si hours
each. One gets $l."ii an hour for
keeping a few minutes the other was
to get 54 cents an hour for teaching
Latin and the principles of alghra and
geometry but fortunately thri were
some men of broad mind on the board
who followed the lead of tho stalwart
J. P. Haas nud voted down this littlo
bugg whose ancestors presented their
backs to the public for so many ages
that their prlogeny lost the power of
proceeding iu tho manner eommonlj
pursued b tho billed called man with
faco to the front and eve ou a Hue with
that of your fellow when met. But of
cotirso the strain f 10111 those few pages
of minutes and that 1.1 warrant may
cause that.
Again we ask what is the need of
such high priced labor? We have
heard that he claims to be a luwjor
though after diligent search we arc
unable to llnd uny ono who has seen
his credentials. But It can't be fOr
legal advice and services for .lako
Bablcr is on tho citj pay roll as legal
adviser and we feel certain ho is able
to 1111 the bill. But then bugg tho
backer has to bo cared for and why
should not the tax payers pay tho
price commensurate with his pres-
ence and the pleasuro of seeing him
like Christian progress through life
with h'is burden. We see onlj this
difference. Christluns's burden was ou
his back.
Wo hear little and see nothing of
that boasted economy the present city
government promised so freeli. What
has become ot liV Iu the words of one
of the colored vuter who so loudly
demanded admission into the conven
tion aud got it. "Tho present city
government promised well but It is a
failure." This fact is conceded by tho
party aud tho coloied man otilj voiced
the sentiments of the great majority of
ids party.
