FOUGHT TO ft
Four Cattlemen in The
Cherokee Nation Had
A Terifflc Battle.
RESULT OF A FEUD
Differences Of Long Standing Led
To Fatal Afiray Near Town
Of CollinsvMe-
Vinita I. T. April 21 In a
gght beween two cattlemen west of
Collinsvill Cherokee nation Will
iam Phillips was killed instantly
and Win. Mayficld Jess Skidmoro
and Liege Johnson were mortally
wounded. All arc prominent cattle-
men who own pasture land near
Oogolah not far from Collinsvillc.
The fight was tho result of an old
feud between Skidmoro and Mayficld
which had its origin in a court con-
test over some grazing'' laud. All
four men were in Collinsvillc dur-
ing the day lieavily armed and ap-
parently anticipating treuble. Lato
in tho afternoon Skidmoro land
Johnson left foV Oogalah. A few
. .. -. -
miles west Mayficld and Phillips
awaited by the roadside. Without
preliminary warning Mayficld rais-
ed his shot gun and fired at Skid-
more who received the load in the
right breast.
As the wounded man reeled Skid-
more turned his gun on Phillips
who had also raised his gun to fire
on him and shot him through the
heart. As Skidmoro reeled from
his horse Mayficld turned his gun
on Johnson and both fired simul-
taneously. Mayficld was wonnded
in the shoulder and Johnson in the
side.
Though desperately wounded the
men tired again and again and each
man's shot took egect. Friends
who had feared trouble and who
had' followed Skidmoro and John-
son from Collinsville arrived at
this point and prcuentcd tho wound-
ed men from finishing their fight.
Though iatally wounded they were
attempting to load their guns.
The wounded men and the body
of Phillips were taken into Collins-
ville. Skidmoro's wounds were
pronounced fatal and little hopo is
given for tho recovery of tho others.
Tho presence in Collinsvillc of a
largo numbor of armed men friends
of bcth sides has led the authorities
to tako precautions to "prevent a
possible clash between them.
