Rook Island Short Lino to LI Paso.
Texas. Uomplotod
Official announcement of tho com
I lotion of tho Hock Island Short
Line between Chicago KaiiKis City
and El Paso Texas has -been re-
ceived. Train service willlie inau-
gurated on March a.
The opening of this new lino to
El Paso marks an important epoch
in tho history ol tho Great Hook
Island Itoutoas well as in the devel-
opment of tho great southwest ter-
ritory of the United States.
Primarily tho completion of this
new line to I'M Paso heralds the
operation of the "Short Line
Route" between eastern gateways
ami the as yet practically unopened
territory to the south and south-
west. At the same time it opens
up a now aud powerful trmm-couti-
nuiitnl lino to tho Pacific coast. Not
only does the Hock Island oxlon
sion to HI Paso secuic for that road
tho "Short Lino Route" butween
the east aud tho south and south-
west but also tho "Low Altitude
Houte" as tho eourtry through
which it passes is of extremely low
allitudo aud the maximum grade of
the road is less than one per cent.
Tho construction of this new ex-
tension has been carried on in the
latest aud most practical manner.
Improved and powerful machinery
both for road construction and track
laying has been employed and the
completion of thu road commenced
only a short timu ago has been per-
fected in the shortest time contist-
ent with Hafoty. Tho track is laid
with 80-pound steel rails aud Htone
and steel bridges havo been con-
structed in placo of tho much used
wooden structures. 'Ibis lino is
built strong aud substantial that it
will bo a monument to good rail-
road construction as well as being
oapliblo to withstand the .vear and
tear incident to tho heavy traffic
which will necessarily aceruu to
this "Short Lino Route."
With the inauguration of train
service between Kansas City and El
Paso tho usual first-class equipment
of tho Hock Island road will bo in-
stalled. An entirely now supply of

Thus it will be readily seen that
tho Great Huck Island will become
preeminently the "Straight Line"
the "Slniri. Line" the "Low Alli-
