It was while attending the recent
convention of the W. C. T. U. In
Stillwater that Mrs. llaninu'tt was
served with papers in the ease.
Oilglnully "i.noo damages for libel
were demanded but more recently
an amended bill wan filed Increasing
the amount demanded to $7000. The
notice of the suit was served on
Mrs. llaininett at the door of tho
IMrst Christian church in Stillwater
where the meetings were being held.
Immediately she employed Attorney
W. II. Wilcox of that city to repre-

Some mouths prior to his filing
the suit against Mrs. llnmmott in
September Ralph Drown a Cashing
negro was convicted In the Payne

In the second. In fact dining the

criminal court of appeals here.
The attorney for llrown Is Kree-
I man P. .Miller of Stillwater known
as "Oklahoma's p.-ct laureate" and
also as the man .lin closed the
salooiiH In Stillwater prior to state-
hood Ills wife. Mrs. Kstella Miller

the rotpicst of her husband went
on Iliowu's appeal bend following
the negro's first conviction. Mrs.
M illt r was a member of the local
W C. T. C. at Stillwater and her
husband has been known always as
one of that organization's most ar-
dent friends in the state.
The fact that Mrs. Miller had sign-

in some manner to Mrs. Cora I).

Jury of six men. The letter evident-
ly was shown to Attorney Miller by
his wife and the suit for libel fol-

of the letter and alleges the lan-

In applying t the state criminal
court of appoals for a writ of habeas
toi pus releasing llrown from his
i i cent sentence at Cushlng on a
bootlegging charge it Is maintained
by Attorney Miller that tho provi-
sions of the law making Cushlng a
e unty court town were not coin-
. plied with In llrown's caso for the
reason that an affidavit was not
filed at the time proceedings were
commenced against llrown to the ef-
fect that tho convenience of the par-
' ties Interested required the hearing
' oi the case to be had at Cashing. It
is believed by Mr. Miller that this
constitutes a loophole that will re-
' lease Hrown from his recent con-
viction. Although the trial Judge A. II.
Huston ol (itithrlc In the libel suit
against Mrs. llanimett has main-
tained her demurrer announcement
of an appeal has been made by
llrown's att rneys to the state su-
i pi eiiio court where the chief Jus
tice Is Mathew .1. Kane of King-
fisher. Her demurrer alleged that
there were not sufficient grounds
for the suit. In all probability It
will not come up for argument in
the higher court for several months
ami In the meantime the outcome Is
being awaited with great Interest.
When told that Judge Huston had
sustained her demurrer Mrs. llani-
mett wild: "The action of the court
Is no surprise to me as I have
never felt any particular uneasiness
as to the outcome."
The filing of the case In Still-
water has caused great dissension

Mr. Gould drew from his pocket a

Judge Dillon mused for a moment
and then said:
"I presume that ynu know that you

DEAR SIRS:-
Rcplying to yours of recent date have to say that
your culverts are giving the greatest satisfaction.
One week ago today we placed one of your Watson
Patent Metal Culverts 12 inch in diameter at the inter-
section of D Street and 2nd Avenue and placed about
8 inches of LOOSELY PACKED DRY dirt over
same. All of Ringling Bros. Pole and Parade wagons
passed safely over same. One wagon No. 33 weigh-
ing seven tons and pulled by 16 large horses rode safely
over with no effect whatever on the culvert and we
are more than satisfied with this test as no surer one
could be made.
You are at liberty to use this letter over my signa-
