Practical Philanthropist.
This Christmas season of 1909 sees
the twentieth anniversary of a re-
markable Individual effort toward
helpfulness and happiness. On tho
day after Christmas 188'J Miss Sal-
' e Stu'sman of Djyton Ohio had
her attention called througli personal
Investigation to tho barrenness or
some homes during this season. He
solving that In tho future no child or
poverty In her neighborhood or In tho
city nt large should be left unwarmcil
by the Christmas spirit she has bent
her energies all these years to p'ay-
Ing Santa Claus with such effect thai
her work has become one of tho per-
manent agencies for happiness In the
community.
Miss Stutsman's plan has two things
to recommend It secrecy and slmpllc-
'ty. Of tho hundreds of children
whom she has made happy not one
ever suspected the name of the givct-.
She began by sending not only useful
but distinctly attractive presents to
n few children In her neighborhood
using her own not unlimited means.
Then thu demand grew as she found
tho unspeakable happiness produced
by so little outlay and she longed
to do more. Seeing how carelessly
rich uh'ldren treat their toys and how
frequently they are replaced by new
ones It occurred to her to beg for
these playthings and mako them v-
duty a second time. To ask was to
have and offerings poured In fron
nil sides. Dolls with no heads head 1 1
with no bodies wagons on three
wheels tables which had lojt a leg
flru engines with the paint n eked off .

The palate is almost tickled
with Scott's Emulsion of Cod
Liver Oil. Thestomach knows
nothing about it it does not
trouble you there. You feel
it first in the strength it
brings; it shows in the color
of cheek and smoothing out
of wrinkles.
It was a beautiful thing to
do to cover the odious taste
of Cod Liver Oil evade the
tax on the stomach and take
health by surprise.
It warms soothes strength-
ens and invigorates.

Stutsman's mill. She snllsted the
wll' ng services of n school boy with
mechanical cleverness who gave his
Siturdays and together they glued
and painted whittled and tacked by
the hour supplying tho lack of every-
thing from missing icss (tables o.

automobl'es). They erased marking

and pa ntcd faces for rag dolls. In
course of tlmo tho one boy became a

man's homo where they worked look-

Care Is taken to find out who the
children are what their ages and
what they want. Miss Stutstnar.M
nlders nnd abettors are the school
teachers tho district nurses tho po-
licemen and the Women's Christian
Association wnrd workers. They
know tho children even tho poor who
will have some kind of Christmas eel-
cbrallon and they know the chlhnon
who w ll have none. And these are
the ones Miss Stutsman Is after.
Now tho work lasts the year round.
Miss Stutsman stows away bargains
during January sales orders dol's In
June buys silk remnants In August
and dresses the pretty babies all
tl'roiigh September October and No-
vember. When It Is learned that
twenty-flvo dozen dolls were ordered
last summer for thu Christmas of
1909 It may be surmised that the
work of cloth'ng them must take
many weeks. The dolls are a'ways
dressed In light clothes while If possi-
ble with gray ribbons and lace. A doll
In gingham Is never sent to one of
Miss Stutsmnii's children It 'b tho
gingham side of life that Is theirs the
Bilk side that they want.
If Miss Stutsman stands as the un-
known benefactor sho docs not hch
testimony of the Joy her work has
brought Into empty ll'tlu lives. From
doctors v'sltlng nurses policemen
nnd teachers come storleB of tho
transformation upon tho faces of lit-
