THE BIRTHDAY OF '
STANDARD TIME
TODAY MARKS TWENTY-SIXTH
ANNIVERSARY OF ADOPTION OF
PRESENT "STANDARD TIME."
Washington Nov. 18. Father Tint'

is the twenty-six'h anniversary of the
adoption of what Is now known ni
"standard time." Previous to Nov.

been a very bu.ty and much-haraiiod
old gentleman for there were In ox-
s nice no loss than hulf-a-hundred
systems of measuring time. In Nov.
IS twenty-six years ago there was a
general resulting of watches and
clocks all over the United Sta'es and
Canada and the four great time zones
one hour apart Into which the country
is divided came into being. Prac.Ically
everyone knows that thoro are four
different standards of time prevailing
in the United States Eastern Gen-
ual Mountain and Pacific time-
bill them are few that know that the
adoption of this method of tegulat-
ing time wa due utmost entirely to j
the efforts of one man a Now York- j

Ily general consent the credit of
this uork of bring. it order whore '
chaos reigned before is given to W.
F. Allen secretary and treasurer
the American Hallway Association
and since U72 editor of the Offiia!
Hallway Cuide. In recognition of
this achievement Mr. Allen Is of! on
relerred to aa "Father Time" or the
"Father of Standard Time." His Is
tho distinction of having caused a
greater change In the habits of tho
pioplu iu thu United States and Can-
ada than any other man now living.
.Mr. Allen Is the only titan who
ivcr lived that once caused Trinity
cluck to stop three and onehalf win i

corner of Wall street and ltroadivay

The day on which this almost
wotld-wlde revolution In measuring
time took place was November IS
18SII. There are people who wilt ro-
j call what excltmcnt It caused at the
I time. There were those who declared
such a thing an outrageous and Im-
pertinent meddling with the affairs of
the Almighty and there was otte
clergyman in Charleston S. C. who
declared that this presumption on mo
part of puny humans would bo follow-
ed by some terrible visitation signi-
fying the anger ot the Heavenly low-
ers. Tho Charleston uarthipiakn did
follow soon after and no doubt the
worthy clergyman considered this a
special fuilillinent of his dire prop-
hesy. Previous to 18S3 the methods of
measuring tlmo In tho United State i
were so varied and so numerous a.
to be ludicrous. There -vero fifty
different standards used iu the Unit-
ed Slntca from coa.it to coast and on
ono road between New York and
lloston whose actual difference is
twelve minutes there were three dis-
tinct standards of time. Kven small
towns had two different standards
one known ns "town" or local tlmo
and the other "railroad" time. Nat-
! ttrally this condition of affairs caua-
I od endless complications and rail-
road officials were harried to the
i point ot despair in their efforts to
1 make out time tables that could bo
' understood by the lay public.
