on the "Women's Trades Union
Movement In l.'Jreat Hritaln" by
Knthcrlne (Jrnves HusTjey Is publish-
ed in bulletin No. is'i of tho bureau
of labor department of commerce
and labor. The writer filvcs a his-
tory of the movement nnd dlscunaei
its growth the obstacles to organiza-
tion of women the attitude of male
trades unionists the results of or-
Rniilzntlon and the relation of wom-
en's trades unions to low wages and
the sweating system.
Prom the beginning of the move-
ment In 1ST 1 what Is known as the
Women's Trade Union league has
beon the mcst Important develop-
ment of unionism among women in
Oreat Hritaln.
As regards the comparative growth
01 male and female membership In
trades unions In recent years it U
shown that in 1&'JI which Is the
first year for which comparative fig-
ures of female trades union member-
rhlp are available 119 unions in
cluded women and girls as members
cut of a total of lIO:: trades mi- J
ions the female munVbershlp at that j
time being 1 170.10 or 7.S per cent
of the membership of all unions.
Krom 1S9G to 1901 the male mom- j
bershlp Increased from 1.ISC.70S to
l.7tiS7t"7 or 'J7.0 per cent while the I
the femnle membership rose from I
117030 to 1202Sr or 7.S per cent. I
Since 1901 the per contage of gains j
amcng male and female members I
has boon largely reversed. It. 190S
the organized women numbe. eu 2e;- j
S09 a gain of 59.7 por cent over
19o I while the Increase In malo
membership although amounting to
l.10;70 new members represented a .
relative Increase of only 21.7 per
cent. I
I Among the chef obstacles to the I
organzatlon of women workers in !
' Great Hritaln have licon tho tempo-'
r;;ry na. . 0 of their occupations low
wages and low standard of living
trade unlonits in the printing
trades have offered opposition on
account of Inferior workmnnshp nnd
tho general lower rate of wages paid
to women.
It Is stated however "that In
class distinctions and apathy. Male
.Manchester the men trade union
leaders are enthusiastic over the
work throughout Lancashire. It is
difficult to determine Just what the
opinion of the male trado unionist
of the present day is in regard to
the advantage or necisslty of un-
ionism among Industrial women."
As to the results accomplished the
writer concludes thnt the women's
trade union movement has In some
Instances been directly responsible
for Increase of wages has added
sucesful pressure to the Inltlaton
and furtherance of protective logls-
latlon and through tho Women's
Trade Union league has accomplish-

Corrugated Culvert Co.
Guthrie Oklahoma.
DEAR SIRS:-
Replying to yours of recent date have to say that
your culverts arc giving the greatest satisfaction.
One week ago today we placed one of your Watson
Patent Metal Culverts 12 inch in diameter at the inter-
section of D Street and 2nd Avenue and placed about
8 inches of LOOSELY PACKED DRY dirt over
same All of Ringling Bros. Pole and Parade wagons
passed safely over same. One wagon No. 33 weigh-
ing seven tons and pulled by 16 large horses rode safely
over with no effect whatever on the culvert and we
arc more than satisfied with this test as no surer one
could be made.
You arc at liberty to use this letter over my signa-
ture in anyway you sec fit.
Yours truly
V. R. BURNITT.
