NOTES FROM MARLOW 1
BOASTING THE CHAMPION BAS-
KET BALL TEAM WEATHER
AND MONEY MATTERS.
Marlow Okla.. Feb. 15. The Mar-
low basket ball team went up against
the crack champion team from Kd-
mond college here Friday night.
As usual tlio result was a decisive
victory for the Marlow boys. Tho
score was U to II anil by this
victory Marlow established a recoixl
of 20 straight games without a !
feat. Tho home team now claims
state championship and Is prepaied
to defend it against all comers. Fur-
ther our boys are ready and willing
for a swat at the Texas teams that
have been flying so high of recent
days.
One of the hardest spell of weath-
er we have had In years Is now upon
us. Saturday afternoon the tempera-
ture began to get lower and .sudden-
ly a terrific downpour or rain hull
and sleet accompanied by strong
winds caiibed our people to hunt
their storm cellars an A soon after
the warm firesides. Today all Is fro-
zen hard and fast with hall and
sleet iltankcd up In many places.
Again has Marlow been honored
abroad. At the recent consolidation
of the grand chapters of the Order
of ICnstcin Star of Oklahoma and
Indian territories a few days ago.
Mrs. Ada T. Martin of this city wa
uuanlmousy chosen as grand matron
of tho new Juilsdlctlon for the en-
suing year. Mrs. Martin Is the wife
of T. P. Martin Jr.. cashier of tho

the new state. Mrs. Martin formerly
resided In Fort Worth and has been
grand matron of the Order of ICastern

ust last.
Panneis complain that money mat-
tois are In hardor shape than they
have seen It for years and fall to
understand why this Is the case os
peclally when wo have a new state
bank at this place. However this may
be in part explained by a knowledge
of tho firt that tho crops wore quite
short In this section last year and
many farmers could not pay tholr
notes Imlng to be carried over until
the coming fall. Perhaps continued
activity on tho patt of some of our
lawmakers in ways of new banking
laws lias had something to do with
tho matter? Who knows?

It Is entirely probable that Mr. Fow l
lor understood thoroimhly that the!
question r the constitutionality ofj
the rate-fixing provision In bl Mill
would be raised. He provides that'
connics sbnll establish maximum 1
amV in 1 11 1 tn u nt tariff schedules but
that tho commission shnll fix tv'
rate of duty "to be paid upon all .r.-
ports; but In no case shall the riles

by congress."
A.h It appears the Fowler bill while
recognizing the sole right of con-
gress to fix rates absolutely vet
gives the commission the siwer to1
fix the rntes. provided it does not I
go above or below the figures named I
by the legislators as the nnd
low duties. Practically. It would
seem therefore that the commission
can do pretty much as it chooses
with the schedule uuW the Fowler
measure and thereby exercise a leg-
islative function. It Is Just for such
things as this that the Judicial eye
of Mr. Taft Is looking out
