woro passed and the ctutlflcntos of
election to tho eight freeholders elect-
ed Issue. Thu votu was also canvass-
ed. The council also nlllrmed the
action taken by the special commit
tee upulnted to clone tho contract
for the substitution of Iron and steel
In the construction of tlw Fifth -avenue
viaduct for wood the same not
to cost the city any inoro thau tho
wooden structure would have cost.
The police committee was author-
ized to Investigate tho actions of po-
lice olllcer Hanks King In assaulting
several citizens as per the request of
tho governor.
Tho street and alley committee was
also iiuthnrlzod to Investigate tho
work that Is being done by tho street
commissioner and to make a report on
same.

rary waterworks and sower Inspector
to succeed V. Ilrndnax resigned.
Tho council at the opening first
took up the work of canvassing tho
vote for the freeholders and as to
whether or not tho city should take
any further action In securing n char-
ter. Several boxes on tho cliaif.er
proposition were thrown out by reas-
on of the fact that tho returns were
not properly mndu out and hence
could not be counted. Tho vote in
lavor of writing a new charter stood
107 for and 3S against.

out any foundation whatever and that
said parties circulating such report
know them to bo false or could have
ho found them to be by using the or-
dinary diligence thnt any honest m.-tn
should use before mnklng such state-

advertising for bids to reserve the
right to reject any and all bids and

bid and call tho property owners of
