INDIAN TERRITORY ILLUMINAT-

A TENTACLE OF THE OCTOPUS
Owns Every Large Gas Well and Can
Regulate the Produjtlon and
Price at Will Through Sub-
sidiary Concerns.
Muskogee Okla. Juno 10. There
no longer Hootna to 1h tho Hllglitost
dotiht hut what the Standard Oil
company noting through ltri subsi-
diary companies has secured control
of tho gas output ami the bus pipe
lines of Oklahoma Just as haw been
done In tho gaB producing states ot
the east.
Tho Standard la oKratlng In this
state under tho name of tho Indian
Territory Illuminating company. This
is the company which many years ngo
secured a blanket oil und pis leaso
on tho whole of tho Osage nation and
was made to relinquish all but G10-
001) acres containing the best ot tho
oil and pis producing section on
wlikji gome development had been
done. This company owns nnd con-
trols the principal gns production In
the state.
There were two other largo gas
producing companion the Canoy Ulver
company and thu Devonian company.
These two companies had built most
of the great gas pipe line system that
Is rapidly covering tho Btato with a
network ot pipe. These companies
111 most cases piped the.gai to a city
and there sold It nt the city limits to
a com puny that had a gas franchise
In the t1ty. Only In some Instances
were they Interested In tho distribu-
tion ot gas to retail consumers.
Tho Standard saw In these two com-
panies possible competition In the
production of gas and its distribution
In pipe lines so through the Illumi-
nating company of tho Osago nation
It proceeded to acquire a controlling
Interest In theso two companies. Tho
Illuminating company owned some
plpo lines already. It now controls
all of them except those .of a local
character. This makes a syBtem so
large and supplying most ot the cities
of any bIzo that It would bo Imprac-
tical for any othor system to got
enough consumers to pay for building
another. This makes It easy tor thu
Standard to buy up other gas Holds
where tho production assumes any
proportions.
The Oklahoma lau prohibits piping
gas out of tho state. The Standard
can buy gas wells nnd plug them up
and regulate thu production us It
needs it. This It has successfully
douo In other status. This places tho
consumer ot gas absolutely at the
mercy of the Standard except In lo-
calities where a local .production and
a local franchise uui bo hecurod and
two natural gas services In the same
town are not usually prolltablc.
A VERSATILE COMPANY.
Bell Boy Company Makes Good in
Melo Drama.
The versatility of tho Dull Doy com-
pany was demonstrated last night us
well as tho cleverness of Miss Ella
Ualvln tho leading lady. Thu Jump
from musical comedy of a high ordur
to heavy melodrama Is almost li-'o
Jumping from tho ridiculous to the
sublime yet that Is what the company
did. Thu opera houso was well flllud
with patrons and those who attended
wero more than repaid. Tho compauy j
seems to bu as much at homo playing
heavy melodrama as singing choruses
and Into ballads.
Miss Ella Galvln as Hob the news-
boy rtoulj not bo Improved upon lu
thu least and James Grady as Hungry
Illgglns a plain every day ciook was
of tho best and ranks Mr. Grady as
an actor of no moan ability. Thu
support given the principals was with
out a II. iw and the good putronago
received was deserved.
Tonight tho company goes back to
musical comedy and "Two Jolly Com-
panions" will bu tho bill while tomor-
row night tho grand old western com-
edy drama "M'llss" mado famous by

MAY HAVE TO REMARRY
OKLAHOMA PREACHERS HAVE
NOT COMPLIED WITH REGIS-
TRATION LAWS.
Oklahoma City. Okla.. June If!.
June brides in Oklahoma City may
Mini It necessary In order to bo
sure enough brides under the stat-
utes of the new state to be married
oer again. A question has been
raised In regard t tho legality
of alt marriages solemnized by min-
isters of tho gospel 111 this city
since May 'it at which time a new
law passed by the legislature went
Into effect. The law requires all
preacher to tile with tho Judge of
the county court a copy of hit cre-
dentials or authority as a milliliter
of the gospel. No minister In Okla
homa City ha compiled with the
law and all were In Ignorance of
the requirements of the slnlue when
attention was directed to tho mntter
today.
A discovery of the plain provisions
of the statutes carried consternation
and dismay into the ranks ot the
newly wed who can not exactly
IlKure out the present statue of their
condition In life. Legal complications
growing out of the failure of preach-
ers here and In various counties
of the state to comply with tho law
are perplexing. The consensus oT
opinion Heems to be to tho effect
that theso marriages will stand tho
test of tho higher courts nnd Hint
the section of the stotutes being di-
rected merely agnlnst the fnlluro of
ministers to ho properly registered
nnd authorized to perform tnnrrlngo
ceremonies would not necessarily .if-
feet the validity of the marriages.
Warren IC. Snyder nttorney fav-
ored the proposition that the mar-
rlages solemnized by Oklnhomn
preachers would be legal nnd bind-
ing. Penalties might attach to tho
minister for an Infraction of tho
law and It would not bo Impossible
that matrlmonlnl candidates or vic-
tims who hnve paid marriage fees
to ministers not properly qualified
might recover the amounts so paid
In an action nt law ho said.
REMINDER OF YE OLDEN DAYS
TWO WAGONS DRAWN BY THREE
YOKES OF OXEN HAUL-
ING GOODS.
A scene that reminded one of
the olden days In this section of the
country whon tho sturdy plonour
trukod It across tho prairie with
111s toam 01 oxen sometimes 0110
yoke and sometimes three yoke to
seek for himself and family a suit
able spot on which to build 11 homo
was seen on thu streets yesterday
afternoon when a merchant of Poole
vlllo an Interior town sunt to Ard
more two teams of oxen of throe
yokes each to haul goods from there
there. Tho sound of "Geu lluck and
Hall" nnd Haw Buck and Hill'
coupled with thu cracking of a whip
In the hands of the driver who was
either sitting on his wagon ot mer
chandise of walking beside his team
Several of the oldor citizens wero
hoard to remark "That Is how
camu to this country In years gone
by or tho llrst team I uver drove
was a yoku of oxen and used to haul
saw logs to the mill to hvco logs
cut bo that father could build
house for us.
Necessity has compelled ninny of
thu fanners of this section of thu
country to go hack to tho prlniuv.i
modu of transportation on uccount
of thu bad condtlons ot thu roads
which havo been cut up since thu
heavy rain of thu past thrcu months
Gnu standing oil tho corner of
North Washington nnd West Hroad
way yesterday afternoon saw both
thu modern vehicle thu nutnmohllu
spinning over thu street and tho old-
est vohlclu thu ox wagon both go
ing their way and an busluoss.
Thu letison to draw from tho seo

with goods Is that this section ot
thu country needs good roads and
