ON ROAD WORK
HOW TO MAKE AND MAINTAIN A
MODEL EARTH ROAD.
FEW PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS
The Plow the Drag Scraper th Road

"Washington D. C. March 2R. Sk-
clnl While American road builders nro
as capable of constructing good roads
us those of any country of tlio old
world they liavo not been an loyal-
ly supported as tho men of those
countries In maintaining the road-
ways after completion and tho do-
lilorablu statu of many hundred!) of
thousands of miles of road Is thus
accounted for. County and township
olllclnls may at the outset stand the
cxpuutju of having a road built but
they strenuously object when asked
to provide funds to rebuild tin; road
that has been allowed to go lo
ruin.
It Is Important that farmers learn
of tho benefits to be derived from
good earth roads that county boards
be Impressed with the need of a
proper maintenance of the same and
that roail builders and overseers loam
how best to caro for the roads in
their charge.
Tho porslstont and powerful ene-
mies of earth roads aro water and
narrow tires and the constant effort
should bo to guard against their de-
structive effects and remedy all dam-
ago as quickly as possible. The simple

Implements which have been found
to bo of greatest assistance In this
work are the plow the drag scraper
tho wheel scraper tho road grader
and tho split-log drng.
With a s.'uuly soil and a subsoil of
clay or clay and gravel deep plow-
ing so as to ralso and mix the clay
with tho surface soli and sand will
prove beneficial. Tho combination
forms a sand-clay road at a trifling
expense. On tho other hand If the
road bo entirely of sand a mistake
will be made If It Is plowed unless
clay can bo added. Such plowing would
merely deepen tho sand and at the
same tlmu break up the small amount
of hard surface material which may
have formed. If the subsoil Is clay
and tho surface scant In sand or
gravel plowing should not bo re-
sorted to as It would result In a
clay surfaco rather than one of sand
or gravel. A road foreman must know
not only what to plow and what not
to plow but how and when to plow.
If the road Is of tho kind which
according to tho above ln."iuetlons
should bo plowed over tho whoo
width tho best method Is to run
the first furrow In tho middle of
the road and work out to the sldis
thus forming a crown. Results from
such plowing are greatest In the
spring or early summer.
In ditches a plow can he used to
good udvantago but should be fol-
lowed by a scraper or grade. To make
wide deep ditches nothing bettor tlian
tho ordinary drag scraper has yet
been devised. For hauls of 100 foot
or in making "fills" It Is especially
serviceable. It Is a mistake however
to attempt to handle long haul ma-
terial with this scraper as tho
wheel scraper is bettor adapted f
such work. For hauls of more than
SOU feet a wagon should be used.
Tho machine most generally used
In road work Is tho grader or road
machine. This machine Is especially
useful In smoothing and crowning

the road and In opening d.tehes. A
clay subsoil under a thin coating
of soil should not be disturbed with
a grader. It is also a mistake to use
grader Indiscriminately and to
pull material from ditches upon a
mud-clay road. Not Infrequently turf
soil and sill from ditch bottoms are
piled In the middle of the road In a
ridge making mudholes a certainty.
is important in using a grader
to avoid building lip the road too
much at one time. A road gradually
built up by frequent use of the grader
will last better than If compelled
nt ono operation. The foreman fre
quently thinks his road must he h gh
n tho first instance. He piles up
material from 10 Inches to a fool
In depth only to learn with the ar-
rival of the first rain that he has
furnished the material for as many
uches of mud. All material should be
brought up In thin layers each layer
well puddled mid firmly packed by
roller or tralllc before the noxt Is
added. A common mistake Is to crown
oo high with the road machine on
narrow road.
Tho split log drag should be used
to fill In ruts and smooth the road
when not too badly washed. The
drag possesses great merit and Is so
simple In construction that every
farmer should have one. A special
article will he published later tell-
ng how to make and use the drag.
