SENSATIONS IN COURT
JUDGE QUITS BENCH TO SCOURGE
DIVORCE DEFENDANT PAS-
TOR ON WAR PATH.
Knld Okla.. Feb. 27. Shaking his
fist at C. H. l'ennock In district
court and declaring that he "was a
cowardly cur" and that If he open-
ed his mouth he would smash him
through the floor" tho ltev. George
Hale formerly jmstor of the lleplUt
church In Knld but now of War-
rensburg .Mo. denounced l'ennock in
bitter terms at the close of the hear
ing lit Mrs. C. K. I'enuock's divorce
nit la which Hale's name had been
connected with the plaintiff by the
lefeudant.
Kipiwlly sensational with tho ltev.
ale's pugilistic statements was the
enunciation of l'ennock by .lodge
arbor who stopped I'enuock's attor
neys and walked from tho bench to
eliver one of the most extraordinary
peeches ever heard In tho court
ooin. He then stated that he was
disqualified to judge tho case and
inked for a special justice.
"And now" said Judge C-arber as
he waved for tho attorneys to stop
and advanced toward l'ennock "we
have the spectacle of a strong able-
bodied man driving his wife from
home with a shot gun. I am unable
o understand what kind of a crea
ture you are. Yon have broken your
solemn oath to this court and ruth-
o8ly violated the marriage vows."
The hearing of Mrs. l'onnock's peti
tion for divorce on the grounds of
cruelty and abuse consumed tho en
tire day in court. Sho alleges that
her husband circulated stories de-
faming her character and throwing
suspicion on the He v. Halo after
she had visited tho ltev. Hale and
his wife In Warrensburg. She claim
ed that I'onnock had driven her
from homo with a shot gun.
To all these charges I'onnock en
tered a general denial and tiled a
cross-petition asking that the divorce
be not granted. Ho said that if tin
court would give him a chance to
prove his love ho would make her
tho happiest woman In tho world
When tho Hov. Hale was brought
to the stand crowds filled tho court
room but they heard no story from
him. His testimony was ruled out
by Judge Garbor. As tho pastor left
the room ho stopped In front ot
I'onnock and 'wnrnod him to leave his
name alone and threatened punish
mont If ho disobeyed.
i'onnock sat still and took tho chat
Iengo of tho mlnlstor with bowed
hoad.
