Are Your Little Ones Strong
and Healthy?
There is no mother in the land but
wishes her little ones to be strong and
robust. If they are not the main cause
of their trouble is usually the inability
of their little stomachs to care for the
food they eat.
The delight of children is pastry
cookies cakes and all manner of dainties
which contain morcor less grease. If
this class of food is fried or shortened
with lard it is bound to be more or less
greasy soggy indigestible and wholly
unfit for assimilation by the stomach of
a grown up person let alone that of a
child.

Jncksnn Miss.. Feb. IS. Tho sur-
prise of the legislative session oc-
curred today when an amendment

feated the amendment In the hope
that It would strengthen their cause.

CURRENT TOPICS AT CAPITOL
POSSIRLE LEGISLATION
(Hy Willis J. Abbot )
Washington Feb. 21. - Special.
In the discussion of imsstblo candi-
dates for the democratic vice pros-
Ideiitial nomination the latent
name to ho presented In that
of John W. Kern of Indiana..
And there Ih much reason for
JproBontnllon of hi nnino. To
begin with ho has for many year
been a loyal democrat In a tat-
wnlch Is sometimes democratic but.
which ns a rule Is at best merely
fighting ground. Ho has twice been
democratic candidates for the ov-
ernor of Indiana. In ears when
there seemed little chance that tho
candidate of the party could be sue-ii-srul.
It take more counigu and
party devotion to be a candidate for
Mate olHce when the chances are
all against election Hum it does to
Mill for an office which Is assured
.is soon as the nomiimtlon K made
lie has twlcu been given the compli-
mentary vote of his party rw United
Kt.itcx senator. When candidate for
governor in 11)01 Kern ran ahead or
Judge Parker the nominee for pres-
ident hi 11)00 ho did not unite reach
the vote cast for .Mr. l.'ryun but
fell barely 25.000 short of an election
casting the biggest vote ever given
a democratic candidate for governor
of this doubtful state. The stato to-
day Is moro doubtful than ever. The
republicans favorite son Vice-presi
dent Fairbanks holds the organiza
tion but not the hearts of tho peo
ple of his party. The chances of his
nomination are most remote and his
defeat In the convention will leave
many sore places among the repub-
licans of Indiana. Secretary Taft has
no following there -whatsoever. Possi-
bly Speaker Cannon might make a
strong candidate on account of his
residence In the neighboring suite of
Illinois but Washington opinion puts
Indiana very much In tho lino of
doubtful states. So strong a- man as
Kern in second place would contri-
bute greatly toward carrying It. It
Is true that there aro other suites
now doubtful and that might bo mado
certain tor tho democracy by the se-
lection of a favorite son for tho vice-
presidency but without questioning
the possibility of any of these It Is
fair to say that Indiana offers great
Inducements for recognition by the
democratic nntlonal convention.
Possible Legislation.
The long session of tho Sixtieth
congress is practically half neded. but
out of Its labors have come nothing
except a mighty lot of wrangling and
some good speeches. TJio president
Jin" (imbarded both Ihotiaos wltn
messages which havo created sensa
tions but produced no legislation of
any sort. Not one act awaits tho pres-
idential (signature Imoed not ono
bill of general Importance lias yet
como from the senate to the houso
or gono from the house to the senate.
It has been a sosslon of groat talk
and little accomplishment nnd this
notwithstanding the fact that tho re-
publican majority In both chambers
Is big enough to carry with a heavy
hand any legislation which It de
sired to put through.
Hut more with all this power with
not merely tho majority In tho house
but with tho speaker's power added.
and with an enormous majority In
the senate the republicans havo thus
far made absolutely no effort to glvo
offect to any of tho president's re
commendations. This Is tho nioro ex
traordinary because upon certain of
theso Issues presented so vigorously
by President ltoo3ovelt tho domo
crats in the houso frankly promised
their votes to make up for any loss
through republican defection. Mr.
Hepburn of Iowa announced nearly
two weeks ago that the gontlnmon on
his side of tho house would enact
Into law all that tho president do
ninndod. Thus far not ono step In
this direction has been taken and
now tho republican majority Is talk
ing of an adjournment about tho :nbl
die of May.
Of course essentially It means
that tho mombers of congress tolng
politicians want to got away from
Washington In time to attend their
district conventions at which tlmo
thoy nro to bo nominated or defeat-
ed and at which delegates to tho
national couvontlon of both parties-
aro chosen Moro tlinn that It is
significant that tho majority In con-
gress knowing that it will bo hcla
rosponslblo for the record nindj whon
tho election comes desires to mako
as brief and non-committal a record
as possible Tho Idea of doing noth-
ing In tho long session preceding an
election Is very popular. It Is not
made less popular by tho rocollectlon
of tho fact that the session succeed-
ing an election Is so very brlof that
roally nothing can bo dono. And then
comes another long session but by
an unlucky ratalllty that will precede
a congressional election not presi-
dential but of great Importance ho
that the greatest cuutlon should be
taken thin. So It goes from session
to session -wlbli everything thrust
aside by appropriation bills and tho
opening of the pork barrel.
It Is tnio that after loafing ns a
majority of the congress is loafing
for four months important measures
are sometimes forced through In a
few hourB In tho last dnH of tho sos
slon. If that Is intelligent legislation
wo must look upon the Hon. Joseph
(. Cannon as the whitest and most
liberal czar any nation ever know.

Washington 1). C M 20. Form
er Governor Frank Frantz Is still In
Washington and finds occasion to
talk politics while attending to bus
iness. Today ho gave out a cheerful
Interview on the republican situa-
tion In Oklahoma saying that with
perhaps tho exception of ono district
Okl'ihonia will send a solid Taft
delegation to the convention at Chi
cago. That district Is the Third and
the only contest there Is whether
the delegation shall be an Instructed
one. iho says.
It Is equally certain that Ilryan
will get the Oklahoma delegation
in the democratic convention says
1'iantz and there Is little doubt that
ho will carry the stato In the election.

THE COST OF MILITARISM.
Tho Washington Horald contributes
a significant article to tho discus
sion of the cost of federal gotern-
incut and congressional loaders who
are advocating the scaling of all ap-
proprlatlous nnd the omission of all
I provisions for river and harbor Im
proveinonts ought to carefully con
sider It. The Herald shows the mar-
velous advance wo havo mado to-
ward militarism and how wo are
permitting our preparations for war
to strangle the government's ability
to achieve tho victories of poaco to
which wo must look for progress
prosperity and advancing civilization.

Other nations which feel compelled
to maintain great military establish-
ments Invariably practice the strict-
est economy In their expenditures.
They build warships at a minimum
cost and their nnuy expenses are
cut to tho lowest notch. Undo Bam
seems to think that he must spend
money llko a profligate In ordor to
Impress tho people and tho world
with his wealth. Ho Is much llko tho
rich fool who lighted a cigar with
a twenty dollar nolo just to show
that he had money.
Tho laxness of tho pension iollcy
ha been a disgrace to tho govern-
ment for a generation. Thoro aro
hundreds and thousands of men each
of whom havo drawn thousands of
dollnrs from the federal treasury
who never fired a musket during tho
war. If tho multitudes of undeserving
men who got on tho roll through
political Influence were eliminated
thousands of dollars would bo sav-
ed to an outraged people.
As tho Washington Horald de-
clares at the present rato of pro-
gress the time will como when mili-
tary expenses will absorb all tho
revenues derived from custom du-
ties and exclso taxes and then it
will bo necessary to resort to tho
radical tax ineasuro so glibly advocat-
ed by Mr. Roosevelt.
In the meatitliiio what Is to be-
