HER CROSS
EXAMINATION
EVELYN IS AGAIN UNDERGOING
AWFUL ORDEAL.
SHE FENCES WITH JEROME
Jerome's Tactics Today Lacked Fire
of Yesterday Indicating That
His Confidence Is on
the Wane.
Ily Associated Press.
Now York Jan. 21. When Dis
trict Attorney Jerome resumed the
cross-examination of Uvelyn Neshlt
Thaw at the trial of hev husband
for the Wilte murder today he re-
erted to her Kuropean trips with
larry Thaw In 1903 nnd ISO I.
Mrs. Thaw seemed In rather n
sullen mood and answered the prose-
cutor's questions curtly like.
Tho direct Inquiry on cross-examliia-
tlon of the witness lost Its effect
from repetition no new facts having
teen unearthed to confront Mrs.
Thaw with up to this time.
Jerome asked: "How long was It
nfter you landed from Kurope In
l'jo:i nfter telling this sOry to Thaw
about Whlto that you were In tho
Madison Square Garden tower with
White?"
"Some time" tho witness replied.
"A week?"
"Yes."
"As long as that after you had de
clined nn honorable offer of mar
riage (because of this same man?"
Tho witness explained that she had
gono to tho tower with a party and
not alone.
Jerome went over In detail his
former cross-examination of tho wit-
ness nnd repeated much of It. The
prosecutor stood squarely facing tho
witness with tho record book held
In both hands frequently consulting
It. Mrs. TJiaw asked several times
to see tho hook herself. Slid fenced
continually with Jerome telling him
onco that ho was giving the wrong
Impression by reading only n part
of her answer mado last year. Jo-
romo started to reply when Justice
Howling Interrupted addressing the
witness saying "Just answer tho
questions please."
Tho prosecutor scorned somewhat
tired and his attack toward thu end
of the morning session lacked much
of tho fire of yesterday nnd tho pre-
vious trial.
