LATN AMERICA NOW USING
UNITED STATES PAPER IN
PREFERENCE TO ENGLISH.
Washington. SepL 2 According to
advices tht have ben received at
the bureau of Amerfran republics
from representative South American
business concerni a decided Increase
In the valuation of the United States
drafti In the Ijitln-Amerlcan coun-
tries Is taking place. These firms re-
port that this Increase Is especially
noted In the comparison of the valu-
ation of the 1-nndon and New York
drafts.
For many years It has been the
cut torn of the South American bus-
iness houses to tranact alt details
and sales with drafts on iJiodon
banks because of the much better
valuation they could receive when
the amount was changed Into the
currency of the country where they
located. For this reason tf
London draft became almost uni-
versal and only recently has the
drafts from the New York banks eo-tcri-d
Into profitable use.
In one communication which Di
rector Harrett received from a prom
inent fir:;! In Argentine notice was
given of the Increase of New York
drafts In that country. One Inslancu
was cited where a draft on a New
York bank for forty pounds sterling
was changed Into Argantlne gold
coin. The amount given In exchange.
wvib $199.03 Argentine gold or In oth
er words the draft was received for
99.09 per cent of Its par value.
Tho firm stated In1 the letter that
when a draft on a New York bank
for $200 .or comparatively forty
pounds Kngllsh money was changed
the amount given In return was $227
25 Argentine gold. Tho draft In this
case was received for 03.1 per cent

In late years the Michigan and
Indiana growers have been produc-
ing spearmint and tansy. Spear-
mint extensively Is used In cookery
as a flavoring extract
Mint Is planted every year. The
old patches continue to produce for
several years but each year Is lss
prolific In oil. When the yield Is
too small the old patch Is plowed
up and a new one set out to take
Its place.
Most of the farms are equipped
with private stills In which the oil
Is extracted by applying steam to
rupture the oil cells. The Impreg-
nated steam Is condsnsed by run-
ning It through a worm and when
the oil and water rvach a receiver
the oil Is searated from the water.
Oil Is stored In forty-pound cans or
demijohns and some of the growers
have SOO-pound tanks In which to
hold It for satisfactory prices.
