THE MAKINGS OF GLUE.
Not a Dafinits Organic Subatanca but
Product of Transformations.
Glue is not a definite positive or
ganle snMnnce as most icople tup-
po. Chemists tell ut that glue doe
not pre-exist In any animal organism
except under abnormal condltlons-a
tn dK-ae -but Is the product of sev-
eral transformations.
The first transformation takes plncv
tn drying the hide. If a green hide In
boiled after being pretmrcd In exactly
tbe samr nmnner by liming tic while
It Is yet trreiui an entirely different
prodnct of lens consistency Is secured
than by drying the bide after liming
and then bolting.
The nwond transformation seems lo
take place In lulling the material prob-
ably from net Ion of the heat. The
third trnnsforinutlou ixnni In the dry
lug of the Jelly secured In the liolllng
operation.
Still imother transformation fx-rnn

glue anil this series of charges ilo
not end here for glue illsxolied ll

long loes Its form once more and
will not gclntlntre hut will remain in
liquid form.
Gjue yleldlm; substances aro pro-
duced by the animal economy from
protein Unites albumen fibrin and
caeln. The lmxssity of preserv-
ing for nny length of time the stock
from which glue is made renders It
necessary to adopt some system In
chwlnc and preserving It until suf.l.
clent quantities are collected without
I fermentation or decomposition. Hence
' tb refue from tanneries consisting
of the clippings of hides cars r-.nd tail-
pieces of ox calf and nheep and from
kins of other nnlmala nn- preferred
because they enn le dressed with lime
which removes the hair and acta as an
; sntlM-ptlc.
Tlie ordinary' bone steck glue Is made
I from the larger bones of cattle and
I horn piths eollecttsl from different
1 sonrce. A large quantity of waste
bones Is accumulated In the prepara-
tion of tinned provisions.
J If these have not been orcrheated
J and are in good condition a consldrra-
I hie amount of glue can be obtained
' from them. The bones from the bend
ribs and feet give a better yield than
those of the thighs and legs.
I There Is also the hoof glue which Is
mode from the hoofs of different anl
mills. Then there Is glue made from
sinews nnd fleshings and also a grade
known ns rabbit glue made from the
skins of hares nnd rabbits. This glue
makes a good water test but ahonld
never be used to cement a belt. There
Is a large quantity of this glue made
In this country nnd a person not very
fnmlllnr with It could easily be de-
ceived. The age of animals yielding glue
stock lias nn Important Intluence on the
product. While from younger nulmnls
tho production as u rule Is of n lighter
color more abundant nnd more easily
nhtalm-d. It contains more choudrlu
so that for solutions of equal strength
those from mature animals will be
found to be of the great conslsteucy
and the glue more solid.
Then again there Is what Is known
as the pig stock glue which Is made
from the feet of hogs. Next comes the
fhh glue or IslnghiM. lis varieties
are numerous t'nd n thorough knowl-
edge of them can only be obtained
when one Is Krsounlly ucqunluted

from which they are made.
