based on tbe Idea that tbe offices
would go to the democrats. We do
not beltetw many republicans will

that thoao scheming politicians who

milestone In the advancement of free
government and Is not a product of
sectional strife party hatred or the
result of anarchistic resolution but of
the evenly balanced scales of justice
It appeals ton strongly to the fair-

The
Spiral That Connects the Earth
With tho Clouda.
Willie 111 Kanras u few years ago I
j had n very clear lev of n tonndo. It
was nbout ten miles distant rnkslng
swiftly over the prairie. It pu sentcd
tho appearance of a long rope about
two feet In diameter. It extended
from n darlc. Irregularly shaped cloud
to tho earth and was slightly curved.
It was of nearly uniform thickness
nnd leaned nliout thirty-five degrees
from a perpendicular toward the cloud.
A lino drnwn from where I stood to
the cloud would have made nn angle of
i nbout forty degrees with the enrth's
surfnee. After this ropcllke projection
had parted I noticed In the Irregular
cloud n perfectly shaped spiral of sll-
I vcr wiiiieness. it was snapcil like a
great auger and extended from the
point where tho funnel or rope hnd
been connected with tho cloud forward
In the direction tho cloud wns movln?.
All around It was in wild couimotlou.
but tho spiral Itself fccined to stnnd
llko a great white ribbon colled nugcr
shape and fixed secure. This spiral nt
the time I caught sight of It wns lying
In a nearly horizontal position the for-
ward end being only slightly clevnted.
I have never met nny ono who has
seen this spiral la the tornado cloud
but by one who came dangerously near
being caught by n passing tornado I
wns told that tho center of the whirl-
ing funnel wns no r.-hlte ns milk. Prom
his statement taken In connection
with my own observation! I have
formed tho opinion thnt tho center of
nil tornadoes Is n l-rfectly shaped elec-
trical spiral and thnt when In opera-
tion It connects the earth with the
cloud. It Is manifest that such n spiral
would give tho middle of tho tornado
funnel a white appearance ttut It is
not likely that one looking at It In Its
upright form would detect I.- -plral
form. Indeed it would have to turn
Itself In n most fuvorable position In
order to repeal to the eye of the ob-
server Its spiral form Se Icutlflc American.

CITRIC ACID.
The Way the Seeret of Its Manufac
ture Was Stolen.
The proprietor of nn old chemist's
shop close by Temple liar In days
gaiie by enjoyed the monopoly of Inak-
lug citric ncld. More fnvombly cir-
cumstanced than other ecret manufac-
turers his wns n proces.4 thnt required
no assistance. He employed h i work-
i men Lxperts came to sample nnd as-
I r.ort and liottle his products but they
never entered tho laboratory. The
trtyjtlc oieratlons by which he grow
I rich were confined to himself. One
I day having locked the doors and
I drawn tho window- blinds ns usual
sure of tho srf'i;- of his secret the
I chcuilat went homo tu his dinner. A
chimney sweep or n boy disguised n.s
such wide nwnke In chemistry was on
the watch and followed the secret
keeper t Charing Cross nnd sure that
j he would tat return that day the sooty
puiio.opuer L'leii rapidly liaclc to Tem-
ple liar ascended the low building
dropped down tlio Hue. saw nil ho
wnnt'sl to ami returned carrying with
him the mystery of mnklug citric ncld.
The monopoly of tho Inventor was
gone n few months nfU-r nnd the idee
was reduced by four-tlfths. The poor
mnn was heartbroken and died shortly
afterward. Ignorant sif the trick by
nlilch he li-ul I u vtctlmlzed.-Londo:i

THE LOG JAM.
Quick and Suro Must Be the Workers
When It Goes Out.
I)g Jntns lire not an abnormal part
of the rlvermnn's work ns most people
suppose but n regular Incident of thu
day's buMnois. In the breaking of
them the Jam crow must be quick nnd
sure. I know of no liner sight than the
going out of n tall Jam Tlio men pry
heave nnd tug sometime for hours.
Then nil nt once the apparently solid
surfnee begins to creak nnd settle. The
men r.lgzag rapidly to shore. A crash
and spout of waters mark where the
first tier is already toppling Into the
current. The front melts like sugar.
A vast formidable movement agitates
the brown tangle ns far as you can see
nnd then with nnother sudden nnd
mighty crash the whole river bursts
Into n torrent of motion.
If everything hns gone well the men
are nil hnfo nshore leaning on their
peavlea but ready nt any Instant to
hasten out for the purpose of discour-
aging by quick hard work nnd tend-
ency to ping on the part of the moving
timbers. I have 'seen men out of bra-
vado Jump from the breast of a Jam
Just ns It was breaking down to n float-
ing log iihead. thus to be carried In the
sweep and rush fur down the river. A
single slip meant death.-Stewart Ed-
ward Whllo in Outing Magazine.
